James McCune Smith
(1813–1865)

A prominent abolitionist and author, he was the first African-American to practice medicine, to earn a medical degree in the United States, and to run a pharmacy. Smith wrote forcefully in refutation of some of the most common misconceptions about race, intelligence, medicine, and society in general.
