Chapter 6: Development

   1. BODY DEVELOPMENT. As a child grows into womanhood
the body develops, the breasts fill out, changing the shape and con-
tour of her figure. This gradual development of the bust increases
its size over that of the waist, causing the body to measure more
around the bust than the waist. This increased size of bust over
waist is called "bust development." The hips develop in the same
manner and this increase in size of the hips over the waist is
termed "hip development."

   2. CORSET DEVELOPMENT. Because the corset is worn over
this part of the body its bust and hip must be larger than its waist
so that it will conform to the shape of the body. This larger bust
and hip make an increase in measurement over the waist size of the
corset. This we call "corset development."

   3. Notice that the corset illustrated measures 23 inches at the
waist, and 31 inches at the top. By subtracting 23 inches, which is
the waist size of the corset, from 31 inches, which is the top, or the
bust line of the corset, the remainder shows a difference of 8 inches.
This increase gives this corset a "bust development" of 8 inches.

4. Notice that the cor- set illustrated measures 30 inches at the hip. By subtracting 23 inches, which is the waist size of the corset, from 30 inches, which is the hip size of the corset (taken 6½ inches below the waist) the remainder shows a difference of 7 inches. This increase gives this corset a "hip develop- ment" of 7 inches. The word "development" is ab- breviated "Dev." for con- venience.
