Also known as Liber de excellentibus ducibus exterarum gentium (Book of Eminent Generals of Foreign Nations): collection of biographies of ancient generals, written in the late 1st century BCE or early 1st century CE. It is the only surviving work of Nepos, and was originally one of several volumes of the De Viris Illustribus (On Illustrious Men).
It was first mentioned historically in the 4th century, when it was presented to Emperor Theodosius I by grammarian Aemilius Probus, who claimed it as the work of his mother or father and/or grandfather. Modern scholarship suggests that the work is truly by Nepos, but that many of the biographies (with the exception of the life of Atticus) may have been abridged by Probus.
