He was called to the bar at Gray's Inn in 1827, and afterwards became a member of Lincoln's Inn, of which he is a bencher. He obtained a silk gown in 1846, and in 1868, on the death of Mr. Commissioner Goulburn, was appointed Commissioner of Bankruptcy for the London District, and continued to hold that office till Dec. 31, 1869, when he was appointed Chief Judge in Bankruptcy. In Aug. 1870, he succeeded to the Vice-Chancellorship vacated by Sir William Milbourne James on his appointment as Lord Justice of Appeal; and on Jan. 14, 1871, he received the honour of knighthood.
