sheriff; represented Frederick county in the legislature, 1836-37, and Warren county, 1842-43 and 1866-67. He was one of the founders of St. Thomas' Protestant Episcopal Church, and drew the plans for its church edifice. He married, in 1826, Mary Eltinge Hite, daughter of Major Isaac Hite of "Belle Grove," and Anne Tunstall Maury, his wife. Soon after his marriage he removed to a farm on the north branch of the Shenandoah river, and named it "The Forest." The farm, comprising about a thousand acres was given to his wife by er father, at the time of her marriage, and was part of the original "Yost-Hites" grant which was taken up by Major Hite in 1831.
