Many things remain to be done:

• Enter all text. There is raw OCR text in the Djvu file, but it doesn't contain any of the long dashes or section signs (§), and hyphenated words need to be joined around linebreaks and pagebreaks. Instead of importing the raw text at once, a coarse proofreading is done for each page as it is created.
• Should the text at the top of each right-hand side page (recto) be preserved? It differs from the chapter and section titles.
• Cut out all images (enhance their quality?) and upload them separately to Wikimedia Commons, so they can be reused in the text. (And elsewhere!)
• Find a good way to represent the kinematic formulæ. Can the math tag be used?
• Proofread all pages. Use the index page to see what has been proofread.
• Add markup for all sections (§ 1 to § 162) and create subpages where these pages are included. Link to these subpages from the table of contents.
• Create links in the text for all references to page numbers (also from the index?), section numbers, and notes.
• Identify people mentioned by surname and link to their Wikipedia articles. Also do this for other unusual topics.

Diary

June 6, 2009: After some time away from this project, I realize I must get up to speed. Earlier, I have uploaded text one page at a time, doing some initial proofreading and markup for pages 1-71, 253-266, 544-549, 601-612, 632, 637-652. Now I start at page 72 and just upload the raw OCR text (as found inside the djvu file from the Internet Archive) without any edits. --LA2 (talk) 20:47, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

The Relation of Machinery to Social Life

Section § 137. "The Relation of Machinery to Social Life" was separately translated (from the German original) into Swedish and published in an engineering journal in 1878. Its text is available on the Swedish Wikisource, as "Maskinernas sociala betydelse". However, the English text appears to be truncated and doesn't touch on the social unrest (socialist revolution) that might come unless mechanical engineers succeed to create smaller motors that will render the large factories unprofitable.
