OT′TENDOR′FER, Oswald (1826-1900). A German-American journalist, he was born at Zwittau, Moravia, studied jurisprudence at Vienna, and was among those German youth who, after participating in the revolutionary troubles of 1848, sought refuge in America. Coming to New York, he acquired control of the New-Yorker Staats-Zeitung, which, at first Democratic in politics, but after 1871 independent, has taken rank as the foremost German-American daily. He largely endowed various institutions in his native town of Zwittau, and to New York presented a fully equipped free library. Some years previous to his death ill health necessitated his retirement from active journalistic work.
