    VALENTINI, Philip Johann Joseph, American archeologist: b. Berlin, Germany, 1828; d. New York, 16 March 1899. He was of Italian parentage, was educated at the Gymnasium of Torgau and at the University of Berlin, making a special study of philology and jurisprudence, and in 1854, under government auspices, founded the seaport Puerto Limon in Costa Rica. While thus engaged he learned that the natives had no knowledge of their ancestors, and on his return to Germany he made a thorough research concerning the history of early Spanish colonization in Central America. He later studied the prehistoric remains of Guatemala and the surrounding re gions, and his 30 years' labor in deciphering the pre-Columbian manuscripts placed him in the front rank of American archaeologists. An achievement which added much to his reputation was his interpretation of the famous Mexican calendar-stone, concerning which he published an account, 'The Mexican Calendar Stone' (1878). His other works include 'The Landa Alphabet' (1880); 'Two Mexican Chal chihuites' (1881) ; 'The Olmecas and the Tul tecas' (1883); 'A Study of the Voyage of Pinzon to America' (1898), etc.

New edition: Historia de Yucatán: Devocionario de Nuestra Señora de Izamal y Conquista Espiritual ISBN 1148953051 (2010) - in Spanish;
Note from Notes on the bibliography of Yucatan and Central America by Adolph Francis Alphonse Bandelier
Bernardo Lizana. (Lizama or Lizaba?) "Devocionario de Nuestra Señora de Itzmal, Historia de Yucatan é de conquista Espiritual," 1663, according to the Abbé Brasseur and Leon y Pinelo. — E. G. Squier speaks of two works: one "Historia de la Provincia de Yucatan, y su couquista Espiritual," Valladolid, 1633, and the other "Historia de Nuestra Señora de Izamal." —Whichever way may be right, there remains accessible as yet, but a fragment published in Spanish, with a French translation by the Abbé Brasseur in his "Relation des choses de Yucatan," 1864. The fragment is entitled : "Del principio y Fundacion destos cuyos omules deste Sitio y Pueblo de Ytzmal . . . . . ." — Lizana is of the highest importance and value, and it is much to be regretted that the entire book is of such difficult access.

Bernardo de Lizana, O.F.M. (1581-1631) (text-passage)
Beside Landa, or even the lesser Cogolludo, Bernardo de Lizana is indeed a relatively minor chronicler of Yucatan. He was born in 1581 in Ocaña, Toledo, Spain, came to Yucatan in 1606, and worked there until his death 25 years later (April 2, 1631). He is credited with mastering Maya and teaching it to many.
His bibliographical fame rests on his Historia de Yucatán, a chronicle first published in Valladolid, Spain (1633). For it he apparently utilited unpublished and now lost sources like Padre Alonso de Solana's "Noticias sagradas y profanas de las antigüdades y conversiones de los Indios de Yucatán." A second edition (which I have not seen) was issued by the Museo Nacional, Mexico, in 1893. A French translation of portions of part 1 was published by Brasseur de Bourgourg (1864).

Diego Lopez de Cogolludo. "Historia de Yucatan." — 1st Edition, Madrid, 1688; 2d Edition, Mérida, 1842; 3d Edition, 1867. — Cogolludo has always been regarded as the historian of Yucatan "par excellence." He is indeed indispensable for any study of Yucatan antiquities, but, like all other authors, he must never be implicitly followed. The closest criticism possible is absolutely required.
The citation on Introduction, p. xxxv refers to: Bernal Diez de Castillo, Historia de la Conquista de Mexico. The actual historical person and the work that are probably meant are: Bernal Díaz del Castillo (Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva España) who accompanied Hernán Cortés.
