Bad transfer

Hi there. I'm not sure how common this is, but as you're a bureaucrat I thought I'd mention that the following pages moved from wikisource.org to this wiki have had missing revisions and I've had to restore them manually.

I only know about these because I uploaded them myself; I'm concerned there are many more that will go unnoticed.

Bill of Rights

I fixed a few, but there are problems with this effort. In some places, the sources do not agree, so the best recourse would be to review the debate surrounding the BoR. That would be a very high degree of effort. -O^O

Hello. The sources disagree primarily because the earliest sources were hand copied, and the scribes changed punctuation and spelling as they saw fit. For those who want to dig into the congressional debates in depth, the best sources are:

• Senate Journal - [1]
• House Journal - [2]
• Annals of Congress - [3]

Most of these sources have appendixes that show the exact text that was passed by the House or Senate:

The Statutes at Large is the "official" source of text that is used by the U.S. Government:

Once the Constitution and Bill of Rights were passed, they were hand written by several scribes. The copy that currently hangs in the National Archives had several changes made by the scribe who wrote it. It is quite popular to use the National Archives version as a source, but one must be careful that it does not match what was actually legislated. -O^O

Yeah sorry about that. I have had a request in for a bot flag since the 5th of september but nothing is happening over there. I think with the confusion of the language subdomains the request was skipped. I waited this long but this is the first day in months that I have had any significant amount of time to work on source. I will hold off on the rest of the Rig Veda. I've got about 100 more pages to do there and then 20 or so for The Picture of Dorian Gray. Divine comedy pictures

Adding to Special Characters

The double brackets and double braces are kind of nice shortcuts for links and templates but they are so easy to type I don't know if anyone would actually use the shortcuts. It might be more useful to have specific templates on there like title, author, by, whatever then the generic empty brackets. --CSN 00:13, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

old users, new subdomains

hi zhaladshar. i'm a bit confused by how these subdomains are working. i had to take a break just as the subdomain vote was starting, so i missed what happened when it passed. at any rate, i've got a user account Wolfman, and a bot account Wolfbot both active on the top-level wikisource domain. neither one seems to be able to edit in the english subdomain. i'd like to become active again. where do i go to get these transferred over to english? i poked around, but missed whatever discussion there was. thanks, please reply here & i'll check back. Hi, Wolfman. You're going to have to re-register your Wolfman account here, as it did not come over when Brion transfered the pages to this sub-domain (no accounts came over with the move). The account you create here will have the contributions of what you did over at the main Wikisource (as long as you use the same account name). The bot, however, will have to be reflagged on Meta. New texts

I went ahead and created Template:New texts. I updated based on the new pages list. Could you insert that into the Main page and see how it looks? Just replace the table under the New Texts heading with {{New texts}}. Thanks, I'll try to keep it reasonably up to date when I'm around. Or, anyone else is of course welcome to. I doubt that vandals will understand the template mechanism. But, if they do figure it out, you can always just protect the template and we're no worse off than before.

Btw, I created two new templates by modifying wikipedia ones: Template:Welcome (for newly created users) and Template:Test for people just experimenting or as a polite nudge to petty vandals. I've been "welcoming" all new accounts, so you might want to have a glance to see if there are obvious improvements to make. Wolfman 19:31, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

Latin 95 Theses

Hey, I was just wondering why you removed Martin Luther's 95 Theses in Latin from Wikisource? I was doing research, and then all of a sudden, it was up and gone! How come you removed it? Thanks!

Thanks for the Warm Welcome

Zhaladshar thank's for taking the time to welcome me to Wikisource. I do have some questions:

I recently imported Sign of the Four from a Project Gutenberg eText. It was ASCII but I took the time to upgrade the punctuation to Unicode. However, it seems that Wikisource' default font, Ariel renders all double and single quotes with no surf (curl) what-so-ever. Thus, to the user, Unicode right and left quotes look the same as normal quotes.

The questions:

I am a fan of the Ariel font (it looks *good* when printed on bright-white paper) but: would Wikisource consider changing its default font to something that has at least minor surf so that anyone else using proper Unicode punctuation would not be wasting their time.

Would it be possible for me to change the default font used just for Sign of the Four. In which case, what font would you recommend. I'd want something that looks a lot like Ariel except for the surf on quotes, etc.

Fractions on the edit bar

Hi. The font I used is Lucida Sans Unicode, which is standard for Windows XP. If you use MS Office than Arial Unicode MS should also have it. If you install BabelPad on your PC you will be able to see the glyphs as well as a heck of a lot more. I have just blown this up on my browser and see that the middle fonts are a bit ghostlyand are not the same design as the rest, being a little bigger in height. I am particurarly thinking about the EB1911 project, where its fairly common to find Greek and Hebrew phrases (names book titles, etc). I would have also thought we will get this if we have editors working on pre – 1800 literary English texts where writers sometimes added chunks of prose from the classical authors in the original scripts. Maybe you might mentions this idea on Scriptorium and see if we can get a consensus. Ps I am just making a start on a WS Tools page in the Help section. Kind regards. Hullo, here is some more stuff for the charater bar on the edit page. There is Greek and Hebrew. I have added at the start, to go on the main character bar, please, a handful of extra ones such as currencies and some mathematical symbols etc it would useful to have.

I take your point about it being too big, but I wonder if it might be possible to code is so that the extra full alphebets below can be accessed in a separate screen or screens by using a button on the present character bar.

I suggest we also have a small selection of historic printers flowers (aka Dingbats). There are a number in Unicode.Much early printing used these as tasteful page decoration. I see we have one in the RH box of the main page. If you are happy with this I can post you some.

The 1911 Britannica project does offer major markup problems not only because of the various type characters, but also because many of the articles have various table formats, mathematical formulae etc. An added problem, is there has been in operation over the past few months a project on Wikipedia to identify topics from other encyclopaedias which WP lacks. A number of WP editors have been importing these from one of the EB1911 OCR sites unchecked and then adding WP markup. I am a bit concerned that some of these are now being added to WS without a note being added to the WS EB1911 page. I feel that a watch needs to be kept to pick these up before major muddle and confusion arises. I have also started adding the Text Quality box to the various EB1911 articles we have on the EB1911 project. So far I have said they are all 25% OK, but a number are fully proof-read and could be locked. When I have got the box on all of them, I will go back and amend the quality details once I have checked them against by paper copy of EB1911.

Incidentally, can you please make a page about requests to admins for locking and put a link on the main page.

Hi, thanks for your message. I fully take your point, but there is space on the bar to get the Hebrew set in line with the Greek one, in other words it would be no deeper than it is now.I think there is room for Cyrillic as well. But all this depends on the screen resolution an editor has set. The mathematical and other symbols in my post can follow on after the fractions on the same line. If they don't go in the edit bar, how are editors to find them? I did wonder if we might have two edit bars, the one we have now, but on which is a link button to access the non-latin language characters on another edit bar. The other option is to have a note on the present bar linking to the help page Text editors for Wikisource, but editors will then need to run on their PC's a dedicated UTF - text editor.

The problem really is that in trying to cope with importing texts we need to be able to follow printing typographical conventions where necessary. For a very large range of our work they will not be needed, but its the texts where they are that need to be covered. Kind regards, and many thanks for your help. Fuzzy-Wuzzy

I noticed that orginally put in "Fuzzy-Wuzzy. I did bunch of things including adding edition info but I don't where your source was from. I corrected some puntuation. They were either typos or else my edition from 1909 had it printed differently. Could you check out my user page and let me know what you think about that sort of setup compared to "Fuzzy-Wuzzy". I feel this set-up would answer objections, but do you feel it is an appropriate way display poetry? Will it become to cumbersome with longer works? Have a look at the bit I have added to Help:Special characters about an interesting page on fonts and Mediawiki. A lot of it is over my head on a first reading. Count of Monte Cristo

I am not sure why you think the current Chapter and title arrangments are ambiguous for Count of Monte Cristo (perhaps because I am tired). Could you explain to me why you think it is ambigious a little more clearly?

Also, could you please delete Sign of the Four it's a duplicate of a previous text (that looks much better) located here: The Sign of the Four.
