Can someone block User:Return of teh w1lly on wh3els quickly please. Thanks! Suicidalhamster 16:34, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Yup, just nailed the bastard as he had the gall to vandalise one of my Tolstoy works ;) He's gone now, Willy on Wheels is a common Wiki sight sadly. Sherurcij Collaboration of the Week: Wikisource:Sheet music 16:34, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Cheers, I noticed just after I had posted that. Suicidalhamster 16:36, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Request for deletion

I am not used to the English Wikisource, so please forgive me if this is not the right place to put my request. Can anyone delete the page Talk:Theodore Roosevelt's Inaugural Address created by an anonymous user who seems testing something?

Regards, Bruno 23:01, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Done. Marking the page {{sdelete}} also works.  :) —Zhaladshar (Talk) 23:31, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

"Uga man" crosswiki vandal

I checked one IP address for sleeper accounts (checkuser-l). There is no recent activity from that address on this wiki.

The abusive user in question has been active on en-Wikipedia, en-Wiktionary, Commons, and possibly other wikis. They register multiple accounts and later engage in either childish vandalism and US political trolling. —{admin} Pathoschild 21:26:36, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Tijuana Brass

I ran a check on Tijuana Brass (talkcontribs) for other sleeper accounts or evidence that may tie it to another account; no activity except the one edit to my talk. John Vandenberg (chat) 10:27, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

GrawpinBlueMP3s

I ran a check on GrawpinBlueMP3s (talkcontribs), which turns out to be an open proxy; no activity except the contributions by this account. John Vandenberg (chat) 11:15, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

66.162.207.21

A checkuser on this IP shows that REDYVA, TonyToddToo, JoshLovestheRange and User:MilkmanDan are all the same person, confirming that the blocks performed by BirgitteSB as "crosswiki per Cspurrier" were spot on. Due to the nature of this IP, I have hard blocked it for a month. John Vandenberg (chat) 00:08, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

The Magician

I have run a checkuser on The Magician (talkcontribs) and found 25 other accounts created since June 2, and having no edits besides their userpage. user:The Magician is of particular concern, as it has sufficient edits that it is now confirmed here on en.WS. John Vandenberg (chat) 01:08, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Are there any cross-wiki implications? This is strange level of sophistication to be unique to our little pond.--BirgitteSB 02:21, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
I was surprised, and there may probably cross-wiki implications. John Vandenberg (chat) 03:08, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

A few checks

I ran a check on the creator of page "Wikisource rapes babies", Captain Kyoko of the USS Sharpblade (talkcontribs) and Comesmade (talkcontribs); no other accounts or activity. John Vandenberg (chat) 08:24, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

71.246.93.58

I ran a check on this IP, due to the strange and excessive interaction with Kmallon (talkcontribs) on "Industrial Society and Its Future", but I did not run a check on the account Kmallon. No other accounts or activity on that IP address. John Vandenberg (chat) 08:41, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Misc checks performed by steward

In response to this, the range 69.4.238.221/24 was checked and the following accounts where blocked:

A check was performed on vandalism account (talkcontribs)

A check was run on vandalism account (talkcontribs)

The following three accounts where blocked for editing "Kira Wales" (protected against recreation)

84.45.219.185

84.45.219.185 (talkcontribsdeleted contribsWHOISRDNStraceRBLshttpblock userblock log)

This IP address was used by Officewiki-internal1 [2] (see WS:S#New internal Wikimedia account for comments). I checked that account just now due to an unacceptable delay in replying to my query on the user talk. If it was an office account, and given it was only activated on one wiki, I would expect a prompt reply and I would also expect that myself or another admin would have heard about this. I asked around, and there was nothing. Anyway, the results:

We already have an autoblock appearing on that IP address: #2099

Sonsoftheowl is banned on three other wikis, and Richard Boneworth and Balkaneditor collaborated on a modern rude poem "Clair de Salino". I recommend blocking those three accounts now, and blocking the IP for 12 months. John Vandenberg (chat) 00:23, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

As per the evidence here, and as (with the exception of Sonsoftheowl) they had some nonsense deleted contribs that didn't show someone here to contribute productively, the others are now blocked too. —Giggy 07:25, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
What do you think about the IP? Long blocks are unusual here, but I can see this one coming back to give Giggy something to do later on. John Vandenberg (chat) 07:29, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
Based on Swollen bremery's actions, and the general tone of this, I'm reasonably sure who this is; a vandal with an extensive history of finding new IPs to work through. I'd suggest blocking the IP for at least 3 months; 12 would be fine, too. If any unblock or IP exempt requests are made, evaluate them on their merits. Cheers, Jack Merridew 07:39, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

I just noticed this stale account which claims to have edited as this IP a while ago. This is the account that placed the 'public terminals' notice on the IP talk page[3] in February. Interestingly, it created a few things, such as Template:Sockpuppet. Cheers, Jack Merridew 15:00, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

"84.45219LS" only exists on Wikisource, and on 24 January 2008 created an inappropriate page "Chevrolet Cavalier" and tagged Return of teh w1lly on wh3els (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · block user · block log · SUL) with {{sockpuppet|Willy on Wheels}}. The productive contribs amount to the templates {{sockpuppet}} and {{Usertalkheader}}, an incomplete and poorly formatted The Two Noble Kinsmen, and a fix on the notice template.[4]. I am guessing this is a role account, perhaps an administrator of the set of public terminals, but I am still not convinced it is a set of public terminals. John Vandenberg (chat) 00:02, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

I have reblocked the IP address for six months with a more neutral message, and requested that the operators set up w:X-Forwarded-For so that it is possible to distinguish different users and the operators can determine who is doing the vandalism. Moulton

In the course of meta:Steward_requests/Checkuser#IP.68.162.241.114.40enwikiversity, it turns out that Moulton has been creating accounts here and taking them over to en.wv to disrupt them, and he used personally identifiable information in the account names, making any inference to those accounts very difficult so I have left them unblocked. Moulton, if you use these accounts here, I will block them irrespective of what the edits are; the ball is in your court - please don't use those accounts. John Vandenberg (chat) 12:45, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Not to worry, Jay. I have no issues with anyone here on Wikisource. My issues are with the irresponsible and erratic custodians on Wikiversity, who have inexplicably abrogated the terms of engagement set forth in the WMF Mission Statement, Vision Statement, and Values Statement. Moulton (talk) 13:25, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Why not just block him, and his socks outright, on grounds of widespread community disruption? One wiki where one is (at least nominally) in good standing should not be an attack vector for causing problems on other wikis. ++Lar: t/c 13:10, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
He has no history here; if he wants to start contributing here, it is worth a shot. If he continues this pattern of being a nuisance on other uninvolved wikis, I doubt we will leave the door open twice. I am guessing/hoping that this is one wiki were there are so few ethical dilemmas that he wont be able to disrupt here anyway. John Vandenberg (chat) 13:31, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
I may not have any history of direct editing here, but I do have a history of contributing to the research to find the materials that others here have been searching for. Moulton (talk) 14:49, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Since when is conscientiously pursuing the educational vision and mission of WMF disruptive? Do you find the discovery learning process to be disruptive? I don't. I find discovery learning to be a joy and a delight. I regret if there are some who find the learning process disruptive of their evolving system of beliefs or disruptive of their habitual and derivative intersocial and dialectical practices in the wake of their current system of beliefs. Moulton (talk) 13:25, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Spin it as you like but I think you'll find less and less people are taken in. You're conscientiously pursuing something, but it's not the vision of WMF. ++Lar: t/c 13:28, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
I have no desire or intention to mislead or deceive people, Lar. I'm pursuing the educational objectives that have long been envisioned for the Internet, ever since its inception. I began this in earnest some twenty years ago, when I began working full time on what in those days came to be called the National Research and Education Network (NREN) under the aegis of the National Science Foundation. Moulton (talk) 14:49, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Moulton, be warned: I will block you for "waffling" if you are not careful. This wiki will not be used for purposes other than the mission of Wikisource, which you have yet to participate in. I will help you if you wish to participate in the development of this educational resource, but wont hesitate to avoid problems that have occurred elsewhere. John Vandenberg (chat) 13:40, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
I take issue with your characterization of my contributions to the project. As you well know, I have taken pains to assist both you and Ottava Rima in locating hard-to-find source materials that you both had asked me to help find. Moulton (talk) 14:49, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Contributions are measured by results, rather than attempts. If you want to help, Wikisource:Proofread of the Month needs man power. You know where to find assistance if you need it. John Vandenberg (chat) 22:29, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps we might agree to archive this discussion, and block the next person to (re-)import this conflict. Hesperian 00:34, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

I have reverted and indef blocked Moulton.[6] I have given him ample opportunity on IRC to understand that Wikisource is a project to digitise sources rather than discuss Ethics. If someone wishes to actively mentor him, and has a reasonable expectation that he would become productive to our mission, they are welcome to unblock him. I can assist anyone wanting to get in contact with him. John Vandenberg (chat) 14:47, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Based upon his posts to this thread, I really saw no adaptation to feedback on his part. He appears to set himself up as a sort of freelance consultant in online communities and proposes radical structural changes to sites without gaining sufficient experience in their existing mission and setup. Wikisource's existing structure works tolerably well already and his track record has not been successful. I'd rather get back to business. Durova (talk) 21:50, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Ev

Hi. I'm an administrator in the English-language Wikipedia (w:en:User:Ev) and, if possible, would like to usurp the account User:Ev for the purposes of the Single User Login (SUL).

User:Ev single contribution here, this edit, happens to be an edit made by me at the English Wikipedia, and imported here ten months later.

Thank you already. Best regards, Ev-wannabe 04:24, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

The techies say that you should be able to log in as "Ev". I suggest you try to log in as "Ev" using your SUL password, and also a few passwords that you may have used in the past. John Vandenberg (chat) 06:14, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
I have not yet merged my accounts, for I still have two last renames to accomplish: in the Japanese Wikipedia (I made the request 11 days ago), and this one here :-)
There's one more detail that I didn't mention above, as I thought it would be unnecessary for the request to be processed (I'm afraid that I'm the very opposite of a techie). I actually did create an User:Ev account here, over a year ago; and as it turned out, it was the only ocasion in which I somehow typed the wrong password twice in the process of doing so. Believe me, I have already tried every combination I could think of, to no avail. It was from this mistake that I learned to add the e-mail address when creating accounts.
So, I would ask you to either proceed with the usurpation, or give me a new password for the old Ev account; whatever option is simpler to you. - Best regards, Ev-wannabe 11:03, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
I dont think a new password can be issued to you; I have informed a crat about this thread, so hopefully you will not need to wait 11 days. John Vandenberg (chat) 12:55, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

If you're changing on all wikis, you're probably going to get asked for diffs from other wikis showing that you own this account on this wiki (eg. "I am The thing on Wikisource"). g'iggy (:O) 00:49, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
This is a simple rename not a usurp. We pretty much rename people like this on request. They really don't even have to give a reason at all. Usurping usually involves a little supporting evidence before we will oblige them.--BirgitteSB 01:32, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

FrankTemp --> Frank (usurpation)

One question: has the user Frank (on other wikis) already been unified for SUL? I ask because we have had problems in the past with usurpation requests for such accounts. We can move the current account (in this case, "Frank") to another account (say, "Frank Usurp"), but when we go to move "FrankTemp" to "Frank" we get an error and the rename does not work.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 17:46, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

  • Yes, my home account reports that it is unified for 7 accounts already. At wikimedia, it seems a bug similar to what you are talking about has been fixed...does it apply to the version you are running and to the situation you're talking about? FrankTemp 17:59, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Merge Osioni -> Osioni

The following discussion is closed:

Done

Hello, hope you can help. I am logged in at my Wikpedia project w:D. D. Sheehan as w:User:Osioni and also have a WikiMedia global account. I originally set up Author:Daniel Desmond Sheehan in WikiSource as User:Osioni. After I changed my login password in Wikipedia I forgot to follow suit in WikiSourse and have forgotten my old login password. Have since changed my e-mail provider as well. I have registered a WikiMedia Unified Login and global account for User:Osioni, which includes WikiSource; however it cannot be completed because it calls for the old WikiSource password, which as I explained is lost. How can my old and new WikiSource "Osioni" accounts be merged ? I received the following reply, which I am following:

Without the password or email there's no way to recover your account or contribs. All you can do is file a request at WS:AN with proof that you own the global account (i.e. a link to the request from another project while logged in) to get the abandoned account moved out of the way. -Steve Sanbeg 21:26, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
145.254.243.65 14:47, 22 August 2008 (UTC) alias Osioni
If you do the following you can regain the name Osioni here. 1) register an accout OsioniTemp or any other name 2)leave a note at w:User talk:Osioni with stating you are OsioniTemp (or whatever) on en.WS 3) leave a note here that you have done those things. Then I can usurp the name Osioni here for your global account, however I cannot merge in your old contributions. They will remain attached to the existing account which I will rename WasOsioni.--BirgitteSB 15:07, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you Brigitte, I have registered an account User:OsioniTemp, and have left a note at w:User:talk:Osioni:==Global account==:Just to confirm for administrative reasons that I am temporarliy User talk:OsioniTemp on s:en.WS. But am not able to sign out ?. OsioniTemp 21:55, 26 August 2008 (UTC) (Something is odd with the links ??)

Have also just re-confirmed my account per email User talk:OsioniTemp 22:11, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Brigitte. There remains a problem: when I log-in under my merged accounts, click on en.wikipedia.org, I appear logged in on my w:User:Osioni page, but when I access my watchlist or my contributions -- I am requested to "Log-in" again. This cannot be called merged accounts ?? Can it be rectified ??Greetings Osioni 16:43, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
It looks unified on the tool. Maybe on old cookie in your browser is messing things up? You might try logging out everywhere or clearing your cookies, then log in on one account, to see if it logs in everywhere. -Steve Sanbeg 20:56, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
I get that problem on some computers but not others. It may be the different ways that different browsers treat cookies.--Poetlister 21:32, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

I've changed my own name on Wikiquote and made a global request on Meta. Not sure if I need to request it here too.--Poetlister 16:12, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

It may not be needed. When I tried it got this:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was: (SQL query hidden) from within function "Article::insertOn". MySQL returned error "1062: Duplicate entry '2-Poetlister' for key 2 (10.0.0.101)".

So letme know if the request on Meta does not fix it here.--BirgitteSB 16:25, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
Actually looking at my contribs it appears to have worked at least partially. Does anyone techinical have a clue if it worked completely or not?--BirgitteSB 20:40, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
All the edits have transferred over to Quillercouch now, so it appears to be done. Though it probably shouldn't have been, seen this. I've noted the rename there so hopefully it won't be a big deal either way. Giggy (talk) 01:30, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

I blocked 212.201.54.112 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · block user · block log · SUL) for offensive edit summaries [7] [8] for two hours. This IP might actually be Zoeoe (talkcontribs), who may have made these edits because of the copyvio discussion on WS:COPYVIO#Sportvereinigung_Dynamo. I have warned this user before for some questionable edits. So we should watch out.--GrafZahl (talk) 15:00, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

unblock request

Sheer567 (talkcontribs) has requested to be unblocked. John Vandenberg (chat) 00:07, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

I’m not sure I grasp the basis for the request. The user’s edits appear destructive, and it’s only a one-day block. Tarmstro99 00:59, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Based on the wording of the request, it's just to cause more disruption. -Steve Sanbeg 16:47, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
An accurate prediction, borne out by the user’s edits after the original block expired. I see that the block is now permanent. Tarmstro99 08:57, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, and I've also been seeing a far amount of autoblocks caused by it, so it looks like they don't give up easily. -Steve Sanbeg 21:53, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Kyoko harassment

kyoko has indicated privately that formerly an offensive username is a stalker, so I have blocked that account and prevented the account from registering new accounts. A reblock to allow new account creation would be acceptable only if there is an apology. John Vandenberg (chat) 23:53, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

I doubt that a sincere apology will be forthcoming, because the person involved has already been banned from English Wikipedia and possibly other projects for abusive sockpuppetry and harassing other people. I don't know if the underlying IP address is static or dynamic. --Kyoko 02:00, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
This harassment occurred on multiple wikis, so I ran checkuser on this account so other checkusers are aware of the details of the activity here. John Vandenberg (chat) 11:50, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

guidance request

just joined. how can I contribute? need to upload sound / speech files (government - copyright free) for historic articles. DADASHIM

If there is no copyright on the files, consider uploading them to commons.wikimedia.org - so that people on WIkipedia, Wikisource and other projects can all use them simultaneously. Do you have transcripts of the files as well, to put here? If so, you can simply create a link by typing [[Name of the article]], such as [[John F. Kennedy 1958 speech]] and then clicking it to "create" the article with your text. Sherurcij Collaboration of the Week: Author:John Masefield 03:22, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
Hi, could you give us an example?
In order to upload audio, the files need to be converted to "Ogg" format, and we would prefer it if they are uploaded to a sister project, "Commons". So, I suggest you create an account there, and acquaint yourself with the "media help" page. John Vandenberg (chat) 03:25, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Mishnah

In Mishnah/Seder Zeraim/Tractate Berakhot/Chapter 1/1 and similar articles, there is a Hebrew text then a translation then an explanation. As far as I can tell, the explanation is not part of the original text but was written on, then imported from, Wikibooks. Is it a properly published work (and if not, it should not be here)?--Poetlister 22:04, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

This might be a question for someone like Dovi.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 22:28, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
I can confirm that the explanation is not part of the Mishnah and is not any of the published explanations that I have checked.--Yehudi 20:39, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Help needed with vandal

Is this the right place to complain about a vandal? I reverted some vandalism from User:66.162.207.21, and he started messing with my user and talk pages. Also seems to be connected to User:JoshLovestheRange. Thank you. Stratford490 13:55, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

This person has now registered as User:TonyToddToo, and seems to be harassing somebody from Wikipedia. Stratford490 14:07, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

User:REDYVA and User:JoshLovestheRange have also been making the same edits, and look like socks, so should probably be blocked. Suicidalhamster 14:39, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

They are blocked, but seem to be able to post on their own pages. I've reverted, but there's little point in keeping it up, as they just revert me. Perhaps an administrator could protect the pages. Same for User:66.162.207.21. Stratford490 14:41, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Sorry yes, I forgot they would be able to edit their own talk pages. Protecting maybe worthwhile if they continue to add the harassment. Suicidalhamster 14:44, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
I protected the pages. Cspurrier has sent some of these edits to oversight so this all may disappear from the history. I am trying to get a checkuser to decide what to do about the IP. I have no idea how to now which ones are dynamic etc. and do not put long blocks on them. So please any admin more knowledge lengthen my bloc on the IP if necessary.--BirgitteSB 14:51, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Since this is still appearing on the Main Page as a featured text, shouldn't it remain protected until another text takes it place? (Feel free to correct if I've misinterpreted Wikisource:Featured texts#Criteria.) giggy (:O) 09:02, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Please see this edit, while clearly not appropriate for main space, needs to be looked into. Marking as paroled, will revert with message linking here. Jeepday 02:38, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Jeepday is right that the edit should not go on the article page. Presumably, this is a correct copy of a published document, so the IP's criticism should be directed at the author of the document, not here.--Poetlister 15:30, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
I am informed that while the court ruling is a copy of a published document, the comments on it are not. If so, they should be removed.--Poetlister 11:50, 9 July 2008 (UTC)
