*BURGHERS, a numerous and respectable class of seceders, from the church of Scotland, originally connected with the Associate Presbytery; but some difference arising about the lawfulness of the Burgess oath, a separation took place in 1739, and those who refused the oath, were called Antiburgers.[1] See Seceders.
