אופתיק, אופתק=הפתק.
אוץ (b. h.; או, v. אוי I; cmp. אפץ; v. חוץ a. חצה) to be pressed (to press, hurry). -- Part. אוצה, pl. אוצין (as from אצה, v. חון, חול) squeezed in. Tosef. Kel. B. Mets. IX. 5 חבור א׳ (Var. הוצין) when they are squeezed in (tight), they are considered as connected for levitical purposes.

אוקיינוס, אוקינוס, אוקיאנוס m. (~~~~~~~) Ocean, mostly Mediterranean Sea. Targ. Y. Gen. I, 7; a. e. -- Y. Hall. IV, 60a bot.; a. fr. -- Tanh. Haye 3, and so is המת ים א׳ the Okeanos called the Sea of (covering) the dead. [Var. אונק׳, אנק׳.]

אור I (b. h.; או, v. אוי II; cmp. חור, חבר, a. sec. r. ארר) to perforate, break through, shine. -- Denom. אויר, מאורה &c. Niff. אור; to be broken through, grow light. Y. Ber. I, 2c המזרח משיאור from the time the Eastern horizon is broken through, grows light. Hif. האיר 1) (neut. v.) to break through, shine. Y. ib. III, 6c bot. open thy lips דבריך ויאיר and let thy words come forth, speak out boldly. Yoma III, 1 וכ׳ כל פני ה׳ it has grown light all over the Eastern horizon. -- פנים מאירות bright countenance. Num. R. s. 11; a. e. -- 2) (act. v.) to enlighten, brighten, make shine. Y. M. Kut. III, 83b וכ׳ עיניו ה׳ (the teacher had opened his (Samuel's) eyes &c. B. Mets. 33a. Num. R. l. c. Ib. את מאירים המזבה (fr. Mal. I, 10) making the altar bright (with fire), feeding the fire on the altar. Yoma 73b, v. אור.

אור II m. (b. h.; foreg.) breaking forth (cmp. Is. LVIII, 8) whence 1) break of day, light, day; fire; trnsf. rise, glory, power, happiness. Ber. 2b אורו ביאת the entrance of his day-break (dawn of his eighth day; Tosaf. a. l. the sunset of his seventh day). Y. Pes. I, beg. 27a החמה א׳ sun-light. Ib. הנר א׳ candle light. Keth. 111b תורה א׳ light of the Law. B. Bath. 4a אורו עולם של intellectual light of the wold (a great man; the Law). Num. R. s. 15 מעלן של אור the celestial fire (believed to be the source of all light and fire); a. v. fr. 2) (breaking in of night) twilight, evening. Pes. I, 1 א׳ וכ׳ לארבעה on the evening (eve) of the fourteenth day of Nissan; v. discussion ibid. 2a sq., about the meaning of our w. R. Hash. 22b; Snh. 70b עיבורו לא׳ the evening following the eventual intercalation, i. e. the evening from the thirtieth of the past to the first of the beginn- ing month. -- 3) (homil. =אורה II) rue. Gen. R. s. 20 in the Pentat. of R. M. it read וכ׳ אור כתנות (in place of עור Gen. III, 21) this alludes tto the garments of Adam resembling the rue, wide below and narrow above; Ar. (Rashi diff).
אור I m. (b. h.; foreg.) prop. light, flame; esp. Pl. ותומים אורים the Urim and Tummim in the High-priest's breast-plate. Yoma 73b דבריהם את שמאירים א׳ they are called Urimm because they give their decisions in a clear way (not ambiguous as the oracles); cmp. Y. ib. VII, end, 44. Sot. IX, 12. Y. Kid. IV, beg. 65b.
