בשש m. (בש, v. preced. ws.) seasoning, relishes. Targ. Job VI, 6 (h. text טפל. -- Ber. 40a ב׳ צריך דין לית (this (bread, being wellseasoned) requires no seasoning relishes to go with it; v. ליפתן.
בשת, v. בושת.
בת I f. (b. h., contr. of בנת) daughter; maiden, girl; servant-girl (opp. שפחה slave). Gitt. 89a לא״א בת a. daughter of Abraham our father, a Jewess. B. Bath. 109a נינהו הדדי כי וב׳ בן son and daughter are legally the same. Kidd. II, 3 גדלת שפחה או בת (Bab. ed. מגוד׳) a. maid or a slave as hair-dresser; a. fr. -- Pl. בנות, constr. בנות. Sabb. בת II f, adv. בבת [daughter, product of], ראש בב׳ (=דאש זקירת בב׳) headlong; אחת בב׳ (=אחת עשייה בב׳, כתיבה בב׳ &c.), at once, simultaneously, suddenly. Yoma 38b לאחוריהם ר׳ בב׳ נזקרים (Ms. M. בב׳׳אחת) staggered backward with a sudden movement (enchanted with the beauty of the music); Cant. R. to III, 6 וכ׳ נסקרין; Y. Shek. V, 48d bot. ראש בת לו נזקרין (read בב׳) rushed forward to him headlong (to congratulate him). Yoma 67b ׳ בב׳ זוקרו Ar. a. Ms. Oxf. (ed. זורקו) he pushes the scapegoat down the precipice headlong. Succ. 14b בב׳ גדי בה שיזדקר כדי ר׳ (Ms. M. אחת בב׳ ראשו גדי . . ., read ראשו בב׳) wide enough for a goat to leap through with one headlong rush. *בתה f. (b. h. =בהה, v. בהי) desolation. Gen. R. s. 31; Yalk. ib. 51 (ref. to וכ׳ בא . . . קן Gen. VI, 13) their term has come ב׳ לעשות to make (the earth) a. waste.
*בתוא, m. בתוותא f. same, esp. the untillable cuts in the valley or field (cmp. בתות Is. VII, 19). Sabb. 110b let him cut porret דמישדא מב׳ Ar. (Var. גובתא ed. Koh.; oth. ed. בוותא; Ms. M. ממכתוותא, ed. דמישרי מכבתותא) from the waste parts of the valley; v. כתא.
בתולא, v. בתולתא.
בתולה f. (b. h.; בתל, בת, to separate; cmp. בתר; v. Ges. H. Dict. s. v.) [retired, uniouched,] 1) virgin. --- Pl. בתולות. Tosef. Shebi. III, 14 sq. הן ב׳ שלש b'thulah is used in three ways, וכ׳ אדם בתולת of a human being (virgin), ofsoil(unbroken), and of sycamores(untrimmed); Nidd. 8b; Y. ib. I, 49a. Yeb. 61b נערה אלא ב׳ אין under b'thulah (in a legal sense) a girl between twelve and twelve and a half years is meant, v. בגרות. Ohol. XVI, 4 לב׳ . . . שמגיע עד until he reaches a rock or unbroken ground. Sabb. 90a הוורד בתולת a closed rose (Var. quot. in Ar., a. Ms. O. פתילת). Y. Sot. בתולים, בתולין m. pl. (b. h.; preced.) virginity, token or symptom of virginity. ב׳ טענת suit of a husband against his young married wife concerning her virginity (Deut. XXII, 13 sq.). Keth. I, 1; a. fr. - Y. Yeb. VI, 7a top, a. e. בתוליה כלו the symptoms of virginity may have disappeared by absorption. Y. Nidd. 49a bot. לב׳ בתולה a b'thulah (virgin) as to virginity, opp. לדמים as to menstruation.
