לחיכה f. (להך) licking, lapping (of fames). Y. Hag. I, 77b 1.a. מסיני כלחיכתן אותן מלחכת האש והיתה and faming tongues lapped them (the words) as they were lapped when coming down from Sinai..
*לחינה, לחנה f. (v. next w.) maidservant. - Pl. לחינות. s. R. s. 40, end; (Tanh. Ki Thissa 13 שפחית).
לחינתא, לחנתא (לחינ׳) . (לן, cmp. לו. to foin; cmp. זוג, לויה II) 1) concubine (=h. פלגש); 2) maid servant (=h. אמה). Targ. O. Gen. XXXV, 22 (some ed. תא. . Targ. Jud. VIII, 31; a. e. -- Pl. לחינן, לחינתא, לה׳. Targ. I Kings XI, 3. Targ. O. Gen. XXV, 6. Targ. Y. ib. XX, 17. Targ. Job XIX, 15.
לחישא, v. לחשא.
לחישה f. (לחש II) 1) whisper; spell, charm. Y. Sabb. VI, 8b bot. (expl. לחשים, Is. III, 20) ניתן שהוא דבר קדשייא הל׳ בית על ear-rings, (namely) that which is put on the place where the whispering for charming purposes is done (the ear). בל׳־ in a low voice. Gen. R. s. 3, beg.; a. fr. -- [Y. Ber. I, 3d top, v. לחשא.]. - 2) hissing (of the serpent), emission of venom. Ab. II, 10 וכ׳ לחישת לחישתן their (the scholars') hissing is that of &c.; Num. R. s. 3, beg. --Trnsf. invidious talk, tale-bearing, insinuation. Pes. 57a מלחישתן לי אוי woe to me on account of their talk; Tosef. Men. XIII, 21 לחישתן בית their mouth. -- Pl. לחישות. Tosef. Sot. XIV, 3; Sot. 47b בדין ל׳ לוחשי those influencing the court by means of secret talk or insinuations.
לחך (b. h.) to lick, lap (cmp. לחת). Y. Meg. I, 71cbot. וכ׳ והיא בלשונו לוחכה he licks it (the ink) off with his tongue (from the interspaces of the letters) so that the Divine Name remains intact. Hull. 142a עפר ילחוך . פה Oh that the mouth which gave forth pearls must now lick dust!; Kidd. 39bילחד (Pi.). Esth. R. to IV, 15 לוחך כי וכ׳ הייתי for I should have been willing to lick the shoe of his (Haman's) foot; a. e. Pi. ליחך same, esp. (of lapping fames) to lick up, dry up, make glowing. B. לחך ch. same. Targ. I Kings XXI, 19 (h. text לקק). 1b. XVIII, 38. Targ. Mal. III, 19 ילחוך ed. Lag. (some ed. ילחיך Af.; h. text להט, v. preced.); a. e. -- Ab. Zar. 28a לשקיה לחכוה they burned (cauterized) his shoulder (to get the poison out). Pa. לחיך same. Targ. Jud. VII, 5. Targ. Is. LXIV, 1; a. e. -Pes. 49a פינכי מלחיך dish-licker.
לחלוח m. (לחח, v. לח) moisture. Cant. R. to II, 1 כבר ל׳ בו יש there is still some moisture in it; (Midr. Till. to Ps. I לחלוחית). - V. לכלוך.
לחלוחא ch. same. - Pl. לחלוחי. Y. Ab. Zar. II, 42a ל׳ עבדת אין if it gives out juice.
לחלוחית ליח׳f same, moisture, juice; vitality. Gen. R. s. 4s ל׳ בה שיש זקנה (Ar. לכלוכית) old age combined with vitality. Ib. s. 61, beg. (ref. to יונקתו, Job XIV, 7) שלו ל׳ זו that means his vitality. Snh. 49a וכ׳ של לי׳ עדיין David was yet in full vigor. Ib. 92b (ref. to Ez. XXXVII, 4; 11) 'dry bones are men מצוה של ל׳ בהם שאין in whom there is no sap of good deeds; Sot. 46b bot.; Yalk. Kings 226; a. e. --[Cant. R. to I, 6 ל׳ ועלה, read; לכלוכית.]
לחלוחתא ch. same. Y. Ab. Zar. II, 42a אסורה ל׳ the juice (brine ot fish prepared by gentiles) is forbidden.
לחלוך, ליח׳ m. (להך), פ ל׳ lapping with the tongue into the month. Lev. R. s. 22; Pesik. Eth Korb., p. 58a; Pesik. R. s. 16; Yalk. Num. 776; Yalk. Job 926; Tanh. Pinh. 12 [read; פה לחלוך כדי בהם יש וכי (not לכלוך, לחלוח) is there in them (the waters of the Jordan) enough (for the Behemoth) for a lapping? [or פה ל׳ כדי בהם ויש and there is just enough for etc.]-- Ib. פה ל׳ [כדי] בהם אין there is not enough &c.
לחלח (redupl. of לחח, v. לח) to moisten. Nipo. נתלחלח to be moistened. Gen. R. s. 36 (expl. האדמה איש, Gen. IX, 20) האדמה נתלחלחה שבשבילו since for his sake the ground became moist again (cmp. Gen. R. s. 33, end, quot. s. v. גריד). Y. Sabb. IV, 6d bot. יבישין שנתלחלהו dry (plants) which have been moistened again, opp. עצמן מחמת לחין, v. לח.
לחלח ch. same. Gen. R. s. 41 (expl. מוגיך, Is. LI, 23) דמלחלחיןמחתין איליןדממיגיןמחתיד (some ed. מכתד) those who make thy wounds flow, who moisten thy wounds, v. מוג.
לחם I (cmp. לוח), to join, or to be joined, be inserted. Hif. הלחים to fit, insert; to tenon. Y. Sabb. XII, 13e וכ׳ את המלחים he who inserts the shutters (of a shop); Y. Bets. I, 60c המלחם (corr. acc.). Cant. R. to V, 12; ib. to IV, 15, v. לחי. Lev. R. s. 3 (ref. to the harmonious parallelism of Is. LV, 7)נסריםומדביקז מלחישני כאדסשהוא לזה זה as one fits (with tenon and mortise) two boards and glues them to one another; כרעי שתי מ׳ שהוא כאדם המטה (leave out לזה זה ומדביקן, v. Ar. s. v. מלח) as one inserts two legs of a bedstead.
לחם II (b. h.; v. preced.) to join. Nif. נלחם (cmp. use of זוג Nithpa.) to come in (hostile) contact, to battle; with ל of person, to assist, battle for. Mekh. B'shall. 2 (ref. to Ex. XIV, 14) אלא לכם דלחם . . . לא וכ׳ כנגדן ילחם לעולם not only this time will he assist you, but he will always battle against your enemies. Tan .h. Mase 6 בישראל להלחם כשהלך when he (Sisera) went to war against &c. Ib. Vayera 7 (ref. בלחומו, Job XX, 23) וכ׳ עם נלחמים שהיו המלחמות על for the battles which they fought against the Lord; a. fr.
