סרס, Pa. סריס ch. same, 1) to emasculate. Targ. Y. Lev. XXII, 24. -- Hag. 14b וכ׳ לסרוסי מהו is it permitted to castrate a dog - 2) to disarrange, transpose, reverse. Lev. R. s. 22 וכ׳ קרייא מרס הוה Resh Lakish interpreted the verse (Is. LXVI, 3) by transposition (making the subject the predicate &c.), 'he who kills a man (thinks of it as lightly as if he) had slanghtered an ox &c. Y. R. Hash. II, end, 58b [read)] מסבלים אלופינו קרייא הדין מסרס ל׳ בן ריש וכ׳ כתיב אין R. S. b. L. interprets this verse just in a re- verse way (to R. Johanan's interpretation), it is notwritten, 'our teachers bear', but 'our teachers are borne withhh', when the small bear with (the shortcomings of) the great, then there is no breach &c. -- Trnsf. to plague, torment, mweary into submission. Gen. R. s. 58 (ref. to ופגעו, Gen. XXIII, 8) [read as;] Yalk. iib. 102 וכ׳ לי סרסוניה לי פגעוניה plague him for me, bore him for me, and if this has no effect, pray for him in my favor (that God may turn his heart to yield to my wishes).
סרס II, Pi. סירס (Saf. of ארס, cmp. אריס) to managc; trnsf. to argue. Y. Snh. I, 18a top; Cant. R. to III, 7 (ref. to סריס, II Kings XXV, 19) ההלכה את שמסרס he manages the decision (argues the point of law); Gen. R. s. 70 (ed.. Leipz. מפרד, corr. acc.), v. מופלא.
סרסא, (סרסיא) m. (preced.) agent, manager on shares, esp. foreman of the brewery. Bekh. 31b אידי ׳ וכ׳ דר׳ סרסיה Rashi (ed. סרסיא) R. J. was R. Shesheth's steward. B. Mets. 42b וכ׳ לשרסיה ליה אמר (Ms. F. a. R. לסרסיא) he said to his brewer, take from this pile. Kidd. 52b סרסיא ההוא (corresp. to אריסא ההוא, ib.).
סרסור, סיר׳ m. (reduplic. of סור; cmp. Arab. sursdr) going around, examination; (sub. בעל) expert, middlesman, broker (cmp. סססר, ספסירא). B. Bath. V, 8 ס׳ היה אאם לס׳ . . . ביניהן if a middleman is between them, and the cask is broken (before delivery to the purchaser), the middleman has to suffer the loss; ib. 37a ס׳ במדת when the vessel belonged to the middleman; Deut. R. s. 3 נשברה לס׳ נשברה החבית; Tanh. Ekeb 11 (corr. acc.). Gen. R. R. s. 8 ס׳ יaע סחורה לו עשה had business done through a. commissioner. Koh. R. to X, 16 וכ׳ מכריע והס׳. יושב הדיין the judge is seated, the parties stand, and the mediator tries to compromise between them. Y. Meg. IV, 74d top וכ׳ ס׳ יaע שנתנה כשם as the Law was given through an agent (Moses), so it must be taught through an agent (the Amora, v. אממורא). Pesik. Hahod., p. 45a הס׳ the agent (Moses); Pesik. *סרסיא f. (סרס; cmp. סורסי) mutilated or reduced coin. Bekh. 49b וכ׳ ס׳ אסתירא (Rashi סוסריתא, סווסריתא; Tosaf. ססוירייא, prob. meant for סורסיא or סורסיתא) a. battered or reduced Istira, eight of which sell for a Denar.
סרסר (v. סרסור) to negotiate, be agent. Deut. R. s. 3 וכ׳ לישראל כשסרסרת (not כשסדרת) when thou wast the agent for Israel (conveying the Law to them), I gave thee as a reward &c. Tanh. Vayikra 6 לזה זה מסרסרין היו וכ׳ they were the agents (phmped) for one another in sins; Yalk. Jer. 309.
סרסר ch. same. Y. Ab. Zar. I, 39csq. ברא.. קנס לסרסור לארמאי דמסרסר he fined the broker (for selling a camel to a gentile), and they called him a man that serves as a Roman agent. Pesik. Shub. p. 165a לדין מסרסר דין והוה וכ׳ and thus they pimped for one another.
סרסרות f. (preced.) agency, broker's fee. Gen. R. s. 72 דודאים של סרסרותן the brokership (conciliation) through the dudaim (Gen. XXX, 16).

סרק II (cmp. preced.) [to cleanse,] to comb, card, hatchel (cmp. b. h. שריקות, Is. XIX, 9). Sot. IX, 5 מותר וכ׳ שם לסרוק it is permitted to hatchel flax thereon. Naz. VI, 3 סורק לא אבל but must not comb his hair. Y. Pes. I, 27b top סורקת must comb her hair (before bathing). Ber. 61b וכ׳ בשרו את סורקין היו they flayed his flesh with iron combs; a. fr. -- Dem.
