צמצם ch. same, 1) to squeeze in, confine. Snh. 76b ההוא וכ׳ דמצמצמה גברא (not מא . .; Ms. M. דצימצם Hebr. form) a man that confined his neighbor's animal so as to expose it to sunstroke; Yalk. Num. 787 דצמצמיה, read; דצמצמה. Yeb. 46a ליה וצמצמו ליה ארפו (o . וציסצמו, Hebr. form) they loosened the halter around his neck, and pressed it close to his neck; וכ׳ היכי כי ליה צ׳ they pressed it, in order that he (when immersing) may not anticipate them and say, I take this immersion as a freedman. -- Transf. to get a person into a dilemma. צמק (b. h.) to shrink. Hull. 55b (expl. חרותה, Mish. III, 2) וכ׳ שצמקה כל an animal whose lungs are shrunk; Tosef. ib. III, 12 צמוקה ed. Zuck. (Var. שצמקה). Sabb. 91a וכ׳ וחזרה צמקה it shrank (became less than the size of a dry fig) and then swelled again. Y. Orl. I, 61b top אם צמקו if the grapes are shrunk (dried). Y. Ter. II, 41d top לצמוק, v. הפח.
