COTTON MARKET.

Friday, Dec. 23.The Cotton market, in the early part of the week, has not been very brisk, though there has been business doing every day, at last week’s prices; but yesterday a great deal of business was done in Pernambucco, at 2s 11d to 2s 11½d and 3s; Maranhams, 2s 10d; Bahia, 2s 9d to 2s 9½d and 2s 10d; and in the evening of yesterday news arrived here, by dispatch from Falmouth, that the embargo in America still continued, and was likely to do so, as far as respects the president’s speech: in consequence of this, a great deal of business was done, even as late as 10 o’clock at night; and in the whole of the day about 3,000 bags were sold at the prices as stated above. To-day some business has been done in Penambucco at 3s. of middling quality, and 3s 1d offered and refused for prime; some of the holders are not inclined to sell at any price at present, in expectation of much better prices.
