Motley, John Lothrop, created D.C.L. 20 June, 1860, American historian and diplomatist; B.A. Harvard Coll., LL.D. 1860, advocate 1837, secretary of American legation at St. Petersburg 1841, United States minister at Vienna 1861-7, and at St. James's 1869-71, author of 'The Rise of the Dutch Republic,' died in England 29 May, 1877.
