Ross, Sir James Clark, captain r.n.; created D.C.L. 20 June, 1844, F.R.S., F.L.S., F.R.A.S., F.R.G.S. (3s. George, of Balsarroch, Galloway), entered the navy 1812, accompanied his uncle, Sir John Ross, in both his expeditions in search of a north-west passage, and also accompanied Parry in his three Arctic voyages 1819-25, discovered the position of the north magnetic pole 1829-33, commanded the Erebus in the Arctic expedition 1839-43, when he discovered Victoria land and the volcano 'Mount Erebus,' knighted 13 March, 1844, commanded an expedition in search of Sir John Franklin in 1848, Royal Geographical Society's gold medal 1841, died 3 April, 1862.
