This hymn tune was originally written as the melody of the Austrian patriotic hymn "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser". There is some debate as to whether Haydn based it on various similar folk-tunes such as the Croatian "Stal se jesem". It has since been used in many contexts, most famously as the Christian tune "Austria", also called "Austrian Hymn", and as the melody of the German anthem "Das Deutschlandlied".
