American journalist from New Hampshire. Among other newspapers, he wrote for the San Francisco Alta California (using the pseudonyms Fitz Smythe and Stiggers), the Chicago Tribune (as Altamonte) and the Gold Hill Evening News ( as Amigo). He engaged in a long feud with Samuel Langhorne Clemens (aka Mark Twain), both publishing insults about the other. Col. Albert S. Evans perished in the unfortunate disaster by which the steamship "Missouri" was burned at sea in October, 1872, while on her passage from New York towards Havana.
