João Guimarães Rosa
(1908–1967)

João Guimarães Rosa (Cordisburgo, June 27, 1908 – Rio de Janeiro, November 19, 1967) was a Brazilian writer, diplomat, novelist, novelist, storyteller and physician, considered by many to be the greatest Brazilian writer of the 20th century and one of the greatest of all time. He was the nephew of Senator João Lima Guimarães. He worked at the Brazilian consulate in Hamburg, Germany, where he helped save hundreds of Jews from the Holocaust. This heroic attitude was portrayed in Rede Globo's miniseries Passaporte para Liberdade, which takes place during the Nazi regime and World War II.
