United States Navy -- famous explorer of the Valley of the Amazon. Commander Herndon chose to go down with his ship while other men were still aboard. All women and children and some men had been saved by lifeboats rowing them the brig "Marine" standing off a distance in dangerous high seas. Herndon was in command of the steamer SS Central America on her 44th trip, which sank after a three day and night hurricane off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Commander William Lewis Herndon is a cousin & brother-in-law to Commodore Matthew Fontaine Maury and uncle to Major General Dabney Herndon Maury
