Short stories edit

Some of the works listed under short stories don't really fit into that category, in my view. I'm not familiar with them all, but some definitely looked more like essays or reflections. I was adding a licence template, and in many cases I also added Category:Short stories at the same time. On reflection, I decided that category might not be appropriate, but didn't go back and change the ones I had already done. I just got more fussy in defining "short story" as I went along. Some seemed borderline between essay and short story. When I get a bit more time, I'll take a closer look, and regroup them. Also, there's a red link for "Sketches by Boz", but some of the short stories under "Short Stories" actually come from Sketches by Boz. I hope to start work on that in the next few weeks. The complete title was:

THE WORKS OF CHARLES DICKENS

IN THIRTY-TWO VOLUMES.

WITH INTRODUCTIONS, GENERAL ESSAY, AND NOTES
BY ANDREW LANG.

VOL. I.

THE PICKWICK PAPERS.

VOL. I.

So in order to obtain a shorter title I have kept only this:

[[Index:Dickens_-_Works,_Lang_edition,_1897,_volume_1.djvu|Works, Lang edition, 1897, volume 1: Pickwick Papers, part I]][1] .

I’m creating the index now:

  1. I have changed Vol 1 into Part 1 because there were two vol 1: the first one was Vol 1 of 32 books: and the second one was Vol 1 of 2 books (The Pickwick Papers), which are the two first books of the 32 books.

Versions edit

@Languageseeker: Based on your question at the Scriptorium, I've taken a stab at simplifying the entry for Oliver Twist. I created a new page, Oliver Twist versions, and moved the detailed links to different editions there. (Not sure if this titling is exactly right, but since Oliver Twist was taken I had to come up with something; it can be moved if needed.) Does this approach address the concern you brought up? If so, we could make pages like this for each of the books with multiple editions. -Pete (talk) 21:47, 9 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much! This looks awesome. Languageseeker (talk) 00:31, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

A note on illustrations and version edit

Dickens revised the work on several occasions and reworked the plates as well. Therefore, one textual version cannot be match and split into another and exceeding care needs to be taken when using plates from a different edition. Feel free to ping me with questions.Languageseeker (talk) 18:48, 16 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Serial Editions edit

Several of the serialized versions have been posted online by the University of Victoria Library. Their website has higher quality scans of the plates and covers that the Internet Archive. Languageseeker (talk) 01:22, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
