Connection with Freeman family edit

Margaret MacArthur was a family friend of the Freemans, a "contemporary" of Margaret Freeman, daughter of Author:Edward Augustus Freeman. Mentioned in Leslie Howsam, Academic Discipline or Literary Genre?: The Establishment of Boundaries in Historical Writing, Victorian Literature and Culture Vol. 32, No. 2 (2004), pp. 525-545, at pp. 536-7. Freeman corresponded with Edith Thompson, another "contemporary", about an Ellen Macarthur, in 1887.[1] This could be Ellen A. McArthur later associated with the London School of Economics, author of Outlines of English industrial history (1898). Charles Matthews (talk) 10:17, 9 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

She was Ellen Annette McArthur, who is in ACAD.[2]. The father was Rector of Burlingham, C. C. McArthur who had previously been a missionary in Ceylon. Charles Matthews (talk) 10:22, 9 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

That's Charles Chapman McArthur, and according to the ODNB, there were at least four daughters. I know of: Frances Elizabeth; Henrietta Catherine Douglas; and Ellen Annette. A tempting hypothesis is that Margaret M(a)cArthur could be another. @Billinghurst:: can you throw light on this, by census data? Charles Matthews (talk) 10:55, 9 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • 1881 England

Nothing visible, similarly for Freeman family. Possibly in the USA at this time if with Freeman family (EAF bio)

  • 1901 England

Nothing evident, not living with EAF's widow.

  • 1861 and 1851 Scotland

Multiple choices no way to narrow down with existing criteria

Noting that Florence Freeman is missing from the same census as Margaret (1881, 1901, 1911), and she died in France 1925, so possibility of being companions as Margaret shown as visitor in 1891.

death edit

  • FreeBMD

Nothing evident showing post 1891 for Margaret McArthur/MacArthur for birth b/w 1840-1850

  • Probates in England/Wales

Nothing evident post 1891 that shows spinster to any known people, noting Freeman family there.

Stopping.

  • Born Scotland 1842 through 1845, earlier likelier.
  • University trained, location unknown
  • First record hit 1871 census.
  • Last record hit 1891 census.

Too many variables and too many options for a Governess, who was protogée of a renowned academic who travelled extensively. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:44, 16 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
