তোমার পিতৃবিয়োগ হইয়াছে শ্রাদ্ধের কি প্রকরণ করিতে পারিবা।
ঠাকুর আমার নাম আছে কিন্তু যোত্র কিছু নাই তাহাতে এখন আমার দুঃসময় বড়।
বটে। গুরুদশা লোকের দুঃসময়েতেই হয় ইহার আর বিদশা নাই।
শুন মহাশয় ইহার কি করি আমার যোত্র অগোচর নাই।
সত্য। তোমার বিষয় বিভোগ সমস্তই আমার জ্ঞাতসার আছে। তাহতে কি করে তোমার আকাশ পাতাল নাম আছে প্রতুল না করিতে পারিলে অখ্যাতি।
মহাশয় সে বটে। আমার সংস্থানের ওপর দৃষ্টি করিয়া একটা ফর্দ্দ করুণ।
ফর্দ্দ করণের আটক হবে না কম বেস হাজার টাকা নইলে কার্য্যের প্রতুল হবে না।
তাতো বটে। দেশ নিমন্ত্ৰণ করিলে হাজার টাকার কমে হইতে পারে না।
তবে তুমি কি দেশ নিমন্ত্রণ করিতে চাহ না।
আমার চাওয়া না চাওয়াতে কিছু হয় না৷ টাকার কার্য্য কেবল কথায় হয় না।
সে সত্য। তবে কি করিবা একটা উপায় ঠাওরাইতে হয়।
শুন আমি নিবেদন করিতেছি হাজার টাকার কমে দেশের নিমন্ত্রণ হইতে পারে না তবে আমি ঠাওরাই সামাজিক বলিয়া কার্য্য সঙ্কলন করা যায়। তাহাও এখন পারি এমত বুঝি না।

Sir, I have a great name, but no ability: on which account this is a bad time with me.
True, the loss of relations always happens in a bad time: what can be worse than that?
Hear me, Sir: What can I do in this matter, the extent of my ability is not unknown to you.
True, I am well acquainted with your concerns and property, but what difference does that make? Your name is spread through the air and the lower regions. If you can't accomplish this work properly, it will be a disgrace.
That's true, Sir. Do you examine my property, and make out an estimate of the expence.
There Is no difficulty in making an estimate. It cannot be done as it ought under a thousand rupees, more or less.
That's true. If I invite all the country, it will not be short of a thousand rupees.
What then? don't you intend to invite all the country?
What is my intending or not intending: this is the business of money. It will not be done by talking only.
That's true. Then what will you do? Some expedient must be thought of.
Attend. I tell you the country cannot be entertained under a thousand rupees: but then I think the business may be completed by inviting the principal people. I do not know indeed whether I can do that now.
তিন শ্রেণী নিমন্ত্রণ তাহার জলপান ও বিদায় এবং অনাহুত লোকেরদিগকেও কিছু২ করিতে হবে।
সর্ব্ব সমেত তিন শত টাকা হইলে হইতে পারিবে।
দিন সঙ্ক্ষেপ হইল চালু চিড়া ও আর২ দ্রব্যর বিলিবন্ধ করিয়াছ।
সমস্ত অবধান করুন পৃথক২ নিবেদন করি।
বলদিকি প্রথমতঃ চালু চিড়ার কি করিয়াছ।
চালু চিড়ার ধান্য দিয়াছি পঞ্চাশ মোন চালু ও কুড়ি মোন চিড়ার ঠিকানা হইয়াছে কেমন মহাশয় ইহাতে কি হবে না।
যথেষ্ট। ইহাতে কাৰ্য্য সমাধা হইয়া আর উদ্বৃত্তও হইতে পারিবে।
তাহা না হউক কার্য্যের অপ্রতুল হবে না।
ঠাকুরেরদিগের জলপানের কি ধারা করিবা পাক করণের সঙ্গতি হবে কি না।
চেষ্টা আছে তাহাই করি দশ মোন ময়দা ধরিয়াছি চিনি চার মোন সন্দেশ পঁচিশ মোন দধি ত্রিশ মোন দুগ্ধ পাঁচ মোন।
ইহা হইলেই হবে তবে আর চিড়া মুড়কি দিয়া কেন অখ্যাতি করিবা।
না। ঠাওরাইয়াছি চিড়া মুড়কি কেবল অনাহুতেরদিগকে দিব।
সে ভাল ঠাওরাইয়াছ। তিন শ্রেণীকে চিড়া মুড়কি দেওয়া নয়।
The three casts must be invited, and something must be done for their entertainment and dismissal; and also for those who come without invitation.
All may be done for three hundred rupees.
The time is very short. Have you made provision for the chira, rice, and other articles?
Please to attend to the whole: I will tell you of each separately.
Speak. First, What have you done about rice and chira?
I have given unhusked rice for these two articles. Fifty maunds of rice, and twenty of chira are certain. What do you think, Sir? Will not this be sufficient?
Plenty. The business will be completed by this, and there may be an overplus.
I don't care about that, so that the business is not incomplete.
How will you do for the brahmuns' repast? Will there be a possibility of cooking?
I have been contriving, I intend to do that. I have put down ten maunds of flour, four of sugar, twenty-five of sweet-meats, thirty of curds and whey, and five of milk.
If you get all this, it will do. Why then should you dishonour yourself by chira and moorki?
No. I have been thinking to give chira and moorki to those only who come without invitation.
You have thought well. You will not give chira or moorki to the three casts?
সে ভাল করিয়াছ তাহাতে ক্ষতি নাই সে অধিক হইয়াছে অধিকন্তু ন দোষায়।
দানোৎসর্গের স্থান কোথায় হইয়াছে।
ঐ দক্ষিণদিগে সভার স্থান হইয়াছে।
কল্য ক্ষৌরের দিন তাহার আয়োজন অদ্য প্রস্তুত করিতে হইবে।
যে আজ্ঞা মহাশয়। অদ্য আর কার্য্যের বক্রি রাখিব না।
দান সমস্ত বাঁধিয়া প্রস্তুত কর।
তা হইতেছে। দুইটি ষোড়শ হবে একটি বৃষ তাহার সামগ্রী তৈয়ার হইয়াছে।
বৃষ ও বৎসতরি আনিয়াছ।
হাঁ মহাশয় তাহা আসিয়াছে কিন্তু বাছুর চারিটা অতিবাদ মাহার্ঘ্য হইয়াছে।
কেন। আগে ওখানে সংবাদ দিতে পার নাই দিলে আমি তাহার ঠিকানা অল্পে ঐ খানে করিতে পারিতাম।
আগে তাহা হয় নাই এখন আর কি হইতে পারে নিবড়ান ঘরে আর যুক্তি নাই।
তা বটে। যাহা হইয়াছে সে ভালই হইয়াছে এখন বিবেচনায় আর কার্য্য দেখে না।
কল্য ক্ষৌর হবে সমস্ত জ্ঞাতি কুটুম্ব নিমন্ত্ৰণ করিতে পারিবা।
হাঁ তাহা হইয়াছে তাহারদিগকে নিমন্ত্রণ করিতে লোক গিয়াছে।
You have done well. There is no harm in that. There is more than enough: however there is no harm in plenty.

Yes, Sir; they are come, but the calves are amazingly dear.
Why? Could you not have sent word before? then I could have secured them for a trifle.
That was not done before, and now what else can be done? There is no altering a house when the building is finished.
That's true: what is done is well done. Now I see no more occasion for consultation.
To-morrow is the day for you to be shaved. Can you invite all your relations?
Yes, that's done. People are gone to invite them.
তাই হইয়াছে মহাশয় এক কালেই কর্ম্ম সম্পন্ন করিয়া আসিবে।
তবে সে ভাল হইয়াছে এক কালে হইলে আর দোকর যাইতে হয় না।
আমি কল্যকার বিষয়ে ভাবিতেছি বস্ত্র সকল ধোপদস্ত হইয়া আসিয়াছে আর২ সমস্তই প্রস্তুত হইয়াছে কেবল মৎস্য ভাল মিলে নাই।
তাহা কালি পাওয়া যাবে এ সহর ঠাঁই টাকা হইলে জিনিস পাওনের আটক হইবে না।
সময়ক্রমে এখন সহরেও কিছু পাওয়া যায় না।
সে সত্য কিন্তু তোমার অন্তঃকরণ ভাল অতএব এ কার্য্যের কোন বিষয়ে অপ্রতুল হবে না।
সে তোমারদের আশীর্ব্বাদ মহাশয়েরা যাহারে অনুকূল তাহার অপ্রতুল হবে কেন।
তুমি বড় ভাল লোক অনায়াসে তোমার কার্য্য সিদ্ধ ও মানস পরিপূর্ণ হইবে।
আজিকার ক্ষৌরের দফা প্রতুলপূর্ব্বক দেবতা সম্পন্ন করিয়াছেন পূৰ্ব্বে আমার বড় ভয় ছিল ভাবিয়াছিলাম কি হয় না জানি।
কহা তুমি চিন্তা করিতেছিলা কেন তোমাকে আমি না কালি বলিলাম আমি যাহা বলিয়াছি তাহা অবশ্য হবে তুমি কোন বিষয়ে ক্ষোভ পাইবা না তুমি কি জান না অমোঘা ব্রাহ্মণাশিষঃ।
বটে মহাশয় আমার সেই ভরসা আমি শ্রীচরণ ধরিয়া রহিয়াছি তবে দেবতা যাহা করেন।
That's done, Sir. They will come and complete all the business at one time.
Then that's well: if it is done at once there will be no occasion to go again.
I am thinking about the business of to-morrow. The clothes are all washed and brought home, and every thing else is ready; only I can't get good fish.
You will get them to-morrow: in this city, if there is money, there will be no difficulty in getting things.
Sometimes we can get nothing in the city.
That's true, but your heart is good. There will be nothing incomplete in your business.
That's your compliment. How should the work of any one fail to whom you gentlemen are friendly?
You are a very good man. Your business and the wish of your heart will be completed without difficulty.
The gods have caused the shaving business of to-day to be completed without any failure. I had many fears. I thought, how shall I get through? I do not know how.
Say. Why was you anxious? Did not I tell you yesterday. Whatever I say will surety come to pass. You will lave no trouble about any thing. Don't you know that a brahmun's blessing is irrevocable?
True, Sir, I hope so. I remain prostrate at your feet. Then it must be as the gods please.
তাতো বটে মহাশয় আমরা শূদ্র আমারদের দেবতা দ্বিজগণ তাহাতে মহাশর পুরোহিত মহাশয়ই আমার কর্ত্তা।
কালি যে২ সামগ্রী যে স্থানে চাহি তাহা অদ্যই স্থানে২ পাঠাও এবং উপযুক্ত লোক নিয়োজন কর সমস্ত প্রস্তুত থাকে।
যে আজ্ঞা মহাশয় সে সমস্ত অদ্যই প্রস্তুত করিয়া রাখাইব।
আচ্ছা। তুমি সকলি জ্ঞাত আছ তোমাকে বলিতে হবে না তথাচ একবার কহিলাম!
ভাল মহাশয় সে ভাল করিয়াছেন আমি কি জানি।
তুমি স্নান করিয়াছ বেলা অনেক হইল দান উৎসর্গ করিতে২ বিস্তর বেলা হইবে।
হাঁ মহাশয় আমি দান করিয়াছি।
এখন এ দফা হইল ব্রাহ্মণ ভোজনও প্রতুলমতে হইয়াছে আর২ সমস্তের খাওয়া খুব হইয়াছে এখন সকলকে বিদায় কর।
অনাহূত লোককে চারি২ আনা প্রতিজনকে দিলাম নিয়মভঙ্গের দফাও প্রতুল হইল।
আচ্ছা তবেই সকল সমাধা হইল। আমার বিদায় এখন করিতে পারিবা।That's true, Sir. We are shoodras. The brahmuns are our gods. You, Sir, are likewise priest. You, Sir, are my sovereign.
Send all the things to-day, wherever you may need them to-morrow, and appoint proper people to attend. Let every thing be ready.

Very well. You know the whole. There is no need to tell you. Yet I have mentioned it once.
Well, Sir, you have done well. What do I know?
Have you bathed. 'Tis very late. It will require much time to make the offerings.
Yes, Sir, I have bathed.
This business is done. The entertainment of the brahmuns is finished, and all others have eaten heartily. Now dismiss them all.
I have given those who were not invited four annas a piece, and the breaking off from the rules (of mourning) is also properly done.
Well said. All is complete. Can you now dismiss me?
