CAPUT XII

Ðys [godspel] sceal on frȳgedæg on þǣre eahtoðan wucan ofer pentecosten.

1. Sē Hǣlynd fōr on restedæge ofyr æcyras; sōþlīce hys leorningcnihtas hingryde, and hig ongunnun pluccian þā ēar, and ǣtan.[1]

2. Sōþlīce þā ðā sundorhālgan þæt gesāwon, hī cwǣdon tō him, Nū þīne leorningcnihtas dōð þæt him ālȳfyd nys restedagun tō dōnne.[2]

3. And hē cwæþ tō him, Ne rǣdde gē hwæt Dauid dyde, þā hyne hingrede, and þā ðe mid hym wǣrun;[3]

4. hū hē in ēode on Godes hūs, and ǣt þā offringhlāfas þe nǣrun him ālȳfede tō etynne nē þām þe mid him wǣrun, būtun þām sācerdum ānum?[4]

5. Oððe ne rǣdde gē on þǣre ǣ þæt þā sācerdas on restedagum on þām temple gewemmað þone restedæg, and synt būtan leahtre?[5]

6. Ic secge sōðlīce ēow þæt þēs ys mǣrra þonne þæt templ.[6]

7. Gyf gē sōðlīce wistun hwæt ys, Ic wylle mildheortnesse and nā onsægdnysse, ne genyþrude gē ǣfre unscyldige.[7]

8. Sōðlīce mannes Sunu ys ēac restedæges hlāfurd.[8]

9. Ðā sē Hǣlend þanun fōr, hē cōm intō hyra gesomnunge.[9]

10. Þā wæs þǣr ān man sē hæfde forscruncene hand. And hī āhsudon hyne þus cweðende, Ys hyt ālȳfed tō hǣlenne on restedagum? þæt hī wrēhton hyne.[10]

11. Hē sǣde him sōþlīce, Hwylc man ys of ēow þe hæbbe ān scēap, and gyf þæt āfylþ restedagum on pytt, hū ne nymþ hē þæt and hefþ hyt ūpp?[11]

12. Witodlīce micle mā mann ys scēape betera! witodlīce ys ālȳfed on restedagum wel tō dōnne.[12]

13. Đā cwæð hē tō þām menn, Āþene þīne hand. And hē hī āþenede; and hēo wæs hāl geworden swā sēo ōþer.[13]

14. Þā sundorhālgan ēodun þā ūt sōþlīce, and worhton geþeaht ongēn hyne hū hī hyne forspildon.[14]

15. Sē Hǣlend sōþlīce þæt wiste, and fērde þanon, and him fyligdon mycel mænigeo; and hē hǣlde hig ealle;[15]

16. and bebēad him þæt hig hyt nānum men ne sǣdon:

17. þæt wǣre gefylled þæt þe gecweden wæs þurh Isaiam þone wītegan, þus cweþende,[16]

18. Hēr is min cnapa þone ic gecēas, mīn gecorena on þām wel gelīcode mīnre sāwle; ic āsette mīnne Gāst ofer hyne, and dōm hē bodað þēodum.[17]

19. Ne flīt hē, nē hē ne hrȳmð; nē nān man ne gehȳrþ hys stemne on strǣton.[18]

20. Tōcwȳsed hrēod hē ne forbrytt, and smēocende flex hē ne ādwǣscþ, ǣr þām þe hē āworpe dōm tō sige.[19]

21. And on hys naman þēoda gehyhtað.

Đys [godspel] sceal on þone þryddan sunnandæg innan lencten.

22. Đā wæs him brōht ān dēofolsēoc man sē wæs blind and dumb; and hē hyne hǣlde, swā þæt hē spæc and geseah.[20]

23. And þā menigeo ealle wundrudon, and cwǣdon, Cweðe wē is þēs Dauides sunu?[21]

24. Sōþlīce þā þā sundorhālgan þis gehȳrdon, þā cwǣdon hig, Ne ādrīfþ ðēs dēoflu ūt, būton þurh Belzebub dēofla ealdre.[22]

25. Sē Hǣlend sōþlīce wiste hyra[23] geþancas, and cwæð tō him, Ǣlc rīce þe byð twȳrǣde on him sylfum byþ tōworpen; and ǣlc ceaster oððe hūs þe byð wiþerweard ongēn hyt sylf, hyt ne stent.[24]

26. And gyf sē deoful ādrīfð ūt þone dēoful, hig bēoþ tōdǣlede; hū mæg þonne his rīce standan?[25]

27. And gyf ic þurh Belzebub ādrīfe ūt dēofla, þurh hwæne ādrīfað ēowre bearn? for þām hig sylfe bēoð ēowre dēman.

28. Gyf ic sōþlīce on Godes Gāste āwurpe dēoflu, witodlīce on ēow becymð Godes rīce.

29. Oþþe hū mæg man in gān on stranges hūs, and hys fata hyne berēafian, būton hē gebinde ǣrest þone strangan, and þonne hys hūs berēafige?[26]

30. Sē þe nys mid mē, hē is ongēn mē; and sē þe ne gaderaþ mid mē, hē tōwyrpð.[27]

31. For þām ic secge ēow, Ǣlc synn and bysmurspǣc byþ forgyfen mannum; sōþlīce þæs Hālgan Gāstes bysmurspǣc ne byð forgyfen. [28]

32. And swā hwylc swā cwyð word ongēn mannes Sunu, him byð forgyfen; sē þe sōðlīce cwyþ ongēn[29] Hāligne Gāst, ne byð hyt hym forgyfen, nē on þisse worulde nē on þǣre tōweardan.[30]

33. Oþþe wyrceað gōd trēow, and hys wæstm gōdne, oððe wyrceað yfel trēow, and hys wæstm yfelne; witodlīce be þām wæstme byð þæt trēow oncnāwen.[31]

34. Lā gē nǣddrena cynryn, hū magon gē gōd sprecan, þonne gē synt yfele? sōþlīce of pǣre heortan willan sē mūþ spicþ.[32]

35. Gōd mann sōþlīce of gōdum goldhorde bringþ gōd forð; and yfel mann of yfelum goldhorde bringð yfel forð.[33]

36. Sōþlīce ic secge ēow þæt ǣlc īdel word þe menn specað, hī āgyldaþ gescēad be þām on dōmes dæge.[34]

37. Sōþlīce of þīnum wordum þū byst gerihtwīsod, and of þīnum wordum þū byst genyðerod.

38. Þā andswarodun hym sume þā bōceras and þā sundorhālgan þus cweþende, Lārēow, wē willaþ sum tācn of þē gesēon.[35]

39. Hē andswarode hym and cwæð, Yfel cnēorys and forliger sēcð tācn; and hyre ne byð nān tācn geseald, būton Ionas tācn þæs wītegan.[36]

40. Witodlīce swā swā Ionas wæs on þæs hwæles innoþe þrȳ dāgas and þrēo niht, swā byþ mannes Sunu on eorþan heortan þrȳ dagas and þrēo niht.

41. Niniuetisce weras ārīsað on dōme mid þysse cnēorysse, and hig genyþeriað hig; for þām þe hig dydon dǣdbōte on Ionas bodunge; and þēs ys māra þonne Ionas.

42. Sūþdǣles cwēn ārīst on dōme mid þysse cnēorysse, and hēo genyþerað hig; for þām ðe hēo cōm fram landes gemǣrum tō gehȳranne Salomones wīsdōm; and þēs is māra þonne Salomon.[37]

43. Sōþlīce þonne sē unclǣna gāst ūt færþ fram men, hē gǣð geond drīge stōwa, sēcende rest, and hē ne gemēt.[38]

44. Þonne cwyþ hē, Ic gecyrre on mīn hūs þanon ic ūt ēode; and cumende hē gemēt hyt ǣmtig, and geclǣnsod mid besmum, and gefrætwod.[39]

45. Ðonne gǣþ hē, and him tō genymþ seofun[40] ōþre gāstas wyrsan þonne hē, and in gangende hig eardigeað þǣr; and þonne wurðaþ þæs mannes ȳtemestan wyrsan þonne þā ǣrran. And swā byð þysse wyrrestan cnēorysse.[41]

46. Đā hē þās þing þā gȳt spæc tō þām mænegum, þā stōd hys mōdor and his gebrōðra þǣr ūte, sēcende spæcon tō him.[42]

47. Sōþlīce þā cwæþ sum tō him, Witodlīce þīn mōdur and þīne gebrōþra standaþ hēr ūte, þē sēcende.[43]

48. And hē andswarode hym secgendum and cwæð, Hwylc ys mīn mōdur? and hwylce synt mīne gebrōþra?[44]

49. And hē āþenede hys hand on his leorningcnihtas, and cwæð,[45]

50. Witodlīce swā hwylc swā wyrcþ mīnes Fæder willan þe on heofenan is, he is mīn brōþur, and mīn swustor, and mōdor.[46]
