Text Appearing Before Image: the leadingmagazines. On the second floor is the reference department and boardroom, also a small lecture room and study rooms. In the basement are thenewspapers, and a room in which free classes in technical subjects are heldduring the winter. The famous painting by James Archer, Peter theHermit preaching, hangs on the main staircase. The library is classifiedunder the Expansive system, and is equipped with separate card cataloguesfor the circulating, reference and childrens departments. Free access isallowed to all books in the reference and childrens departments; a selectionfrom the circulating department is kept on open shelves in the main readingroom, and permits are issued to students and others wishing to consultbooks in the stack room. Residents of Ottawa may borrow, for two weeksat a time, one book of fiction and two of non-fiction.
