English: Repronegatief. While in 1900 in Java as well as all agricultural land were permanently cultivated land, there was much in Sumatra called place shifting cultivation. It is also still the case. One area that has changed in that system, called a Ladang. At the end of the dry season it clipped a piece of wood in all the little wood, where large trees were mostly spared. The felling of large trees would be much more labor costs while also could do service as shade trees. The felled timber was then fired, after which often in the hot ashes sowed or planted, whether or not after having made holes with a dibble. Nederlands: Repronegatief. Terwijl rond 1900 op Java zo goed als alle landbouwgronden permanent bebouwde gronden waren, vond er op Sumatra nog veel zogeheten zwerflandbouw plaats. Dit is overigens nog steeds het geval. Een stuk grond dat volgens dat systeem bewerkt werd, heet een ladang. Aan het einde van de droge tijd kapte men in een stuk bos al het kleine hout weg, waarbij de grote bomen veelal gespaard werden. Het kappen van de grote bomen zou veel arbeid kosten terwijl ze bovendien als schaduwbomen dienst konden doen. Het gekapte hout werd vervolgens in brand gestoken, waarna men in de vaak nog hete as zaaide of plantte, al dan niet na gaten gemaakt te hebben met een pootstok. Na twee jaar worden er op de ladang geen eenjarige gewassen meer gezaaid. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Alors qu'en 1900 à Java, presque toutes les terres agricoles cultivées l'étaient de manière permanente, il y avait à Sumatra encore beaucoup d'agriculture traditionnelle itinérante (sur brûlis ou sous les arbres (système dit "Ladang") qui sont ici épargnés car le coût en travail de leur coupe dépasserait l'avantage de les conserver, pour leur ombrage notamment).
