Summary

Description
English: Caption: Map of Yemen.

Unhelpfully and unannounced, the map blends 19th-century transcriptions of the present-day Arabic names and places with locations from a Latin translation of the 1st-century Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, including untranslated Latin explanations of the extent of the kingdom of "Charibael" (Karab'il). It also mistakes the text in placing Azania (the ancient Swahili Coast) directly under "Charibael", when the text of the periplus places it under the king's vassals at Mocha.
Date
Source "Yemen" in the Encyclopædia Britannica, 9th ed., Vol. XXIV, p. 738.
Author Anonymous, presumably engraved by John Bartholomew & Son or William & Alexander Keith Johnston, both of Edinburgh, Scotland.
