In the background, Eleanor is holding the hand of her father while a man they met (later in the novel to be identified as Victor Bourdon) is trying to pull her father away for disreputable pursuits. In the foreground, Bourdon's companion Lancelot Darrell, later to be Eleanor's chief antagonist, is acting impatient and sulky. Wood engraving in Once a Week, volume 8, page 351.
