Summary

Description
English: Illustration for Chapter 37 of "Evan Harrington" (Once a Week magazine, volume 3, page 253). After Evan leaves Beckley in disgrace, he is waiting for the coach, and Rose comes to talk to him. But they can't say much in public and also Ferdinand Laxley (now presuming that he will be Rose's fiancé) quickly arrives to lead her away. Jack Raikes tries to stop Laxley and gets knocked down for his pains. "Rose disengaged her hand. Evan grasped it. No word of farewell was uttered. Her mouth moved, but her eyes were hard shut, and nothing save her hand’s strenuous pressure, equalling his own, told that their parting had been spoken, the link violently snapped."
