Text Appearing Before Image: been so worried I cant sleep. Idgo around with a hat for you, David. Iwould for you—but if I did ... I dontknow! I cant say. You have a prettygood appetite, you know, David. And ifthe Town should take it into its head . . .Why, David! Whats this on your neck?Where have you been, sir? Whats hap-pened to you? The clouded face of the dog clearedswiftly as his masters long, thin handsstrayed to the broken end of a rope whichhung from Davids collar. The collarwas an old skate-strap, neatly marked inindelible ink with the name of JonathanPerch. But the face of the master dark-ened as visibly as that of the colliehad lightened. Youve been tied up and kept! criedJonathan, with agitation. The dog bark-ed excitedly. Somebody kept you! You gnawedoff and got away! Davids fine head nodded like a mans. David! David! cried JonathanPerch. Was it the Town did it ? David whirled and barked shrilly. Yes or no ? demanded the old man. Bark no ?—One ? Bark yes ?—Two %Yes or no, David ? x\nswer, sir! Text Appearing After Image: LORD, 1 HAVENT GOT ANYTHING BUT THIS DOG JONATHAN AND DAVID. 367 And David barked twice. Oh, groaned Jonathan, thats whatmy worrying meant! I always findtheres reason for it when I have toworry. Theyll take you, David—see ifthey dont! Your poor old master is toopoor to help it. ... I should think youdbe ashamed of him, David. Aint you ? By this time the dog was whimperinglike a child. He stood up and put hisfore paws about the old mans neck andbegan to kiss passionately. Yes or no ? quavered Jonathan.u Ashamed of me, David ? Yes or no ? Then David punctuated the air withstaccato barks, single and sharp—No!No! No! If I were the Almighty, protestedJonathan Perch, or if I were the Town,I wouldnt do such a thing, not if I diedfor it, David! He lifted his trembling hands from thedogs neck and put the tips of his fingerstogether (as one sees them in the greatpicture). Was he praying to God? or tothe Town? In the mind of the old vil-lage pensioner the two may have been alittle confused.
