The narrator, a gentleman of a certain age, wants to propose marriage to the teenager at the front of the picture but first confides his feelings to his friend his own age, Miss Simms, in veiled and highly sentimental terms that Miss Simms (also a sentimentalist) naturally supposes apply to herself.
