Summary

Description
English: Wood engraving illustration for the story "Of a Haunted House in Mexico" by George Lumley, Once a Week magazine, volume 8, page 141. An English traveller in Mexico (center) has stopped for the night at a house whose owner is missing. In this scene, he and the other men in the room are shocked by shrieks of agony apparently coming from nowhere. (There is no ghost in the story, but instead a mundane explanation is found.)
