Most people, even those whoregarded the idea with pleasure, thought that it was an impossibility. Butit has been achieved. Here in this Hall of Columbus vast audiences haveassembled day after day, the members of which came from all churches andfrom all sects, and sometimes from no church at all. Here they sat side byside during long—-I had almost said weary hours; the hours would havebeen weary but for their enthusiasm. Here they sat side by side during thelong hours of the day listening to doctrines which they had been taught toregard with contempt, listening with respect, with sympathy, with an earnestdesire to learn something which would improve their own doctrines. If occasionally the old Adam did show itself, if occasionallysomething was said which had been better left unsaid, no harm was done.It only served to kindle into a flame of general and universal enthusiasmyour brotherly love. Itcould not have been realized without your sympathy and your enthusiasm. Citizens of Chicago, I congratulate you.
