He ran him into a blindchannel, in the bed of the creek, where a tim-ber jam barred the way. The wolf whirledabout, pivoting on his hind legs after the fash-ion of Joe and of all cornered husky dogs,snarling and bristling, clipping his teeth to-gether in a continuous and rapid successionof snaps. Buck did not attack, but circled him aboutand hedged him in with friendly advances.The wolf was suspicious and afraid; for Buckmade three of him in weight, while his headbarely reached Bucks shoulder. Watchinghis chance, he darted away, and the chase wasresumed. Time and again he was cornered, THE SOUNDING OF THE CALL 203 and the thing repeated, though he was in poorcondition, or Buck could not so easily haveovertaken him. He would run till Buckshead was even with his flank, when he wouldwhirl around at bay, only to dash away againat the first opportunity.

But in the end Bucks pertinacity was re-warded ; for the wolf, finding that no harm wasintended, finally sniffed noses with him. Thenthey became friendly, and played about in thenervous, half-coy way with which fierce beastsbelie their fierceness. After some time of thisthe wolf started off at an easy lope in a mannerthat plainly showed he was going somewhere.He made it clear to Buck that he was to come, 204 THE CALL OF THE WILD and they ran side by side through the sombretwilight, straight up the creek bed, into thegorge from which it issued, and across thebleak divide where it took its rise. On the opposite slope of the watershedthey came down into a level country wherewere great stretches of forest and manystreams, and through these great stretchesthey ran steadily, hour after hour, the sunrising higher and the day growing warmer.Buck was wildly glad.
