Note: The Wikilivres website has been down since 2019. |
Wikilivres is a project similar to Wikisource. It is based in New Zealand, so it operates according to New Zealand copyright law rather than United States law. Some works that are not acceptable on Wikisource due to copyright may be acceptable on Wikilivres instead. Wikisource can link to Wikilivres by a wikilink or with a soft-redirect template. The wiki was formerly hosted in Canada and has been associated with members of Wikimedia Canada in the past.
Note that Wikilivres is a multi-lingual project, with most texts being in English, French, Polish, Russian and Spanish along with a handful in Albanian, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, Esperanto, Georgian and German. It also accepts media files which makes it complement Wikimedia Commons as well.
New Zealand copyright law
editBoth American and New Zealand copyright law include different categories for works that are in the public domain based on when they were published or the author's birth and death dates. Generally, New Zealand law allows for works to enter the public domain 50 years after the author's death. See Wikilivres' page on the public domain and their Inclusion policy for more information.
Linking to Wikilivres
editThis site has been added to our interwiki map, so a wikilink to Wikilivres appears as: [[wikilivres:Foo]]. You can also use {{Wikilivres}} (or the shortcut {{wl}}) to make a link which also points to this page for an individual work. If you want to point to an author who has works on that site then use {{Wikilivres page}}.
It is helpful to use the templates mentioned above for linking to Wikilivres in case something about the configuration of their site changes. In fact, Wikilivres, which was originally based in Canada and then moved to South Korea before relocating to New Zealand, used to be hosted under the domain name "wikilivres.info" and subsequently moved to "wikilivres.ca", "wiki.classics.io" , "biblio.wiki" and most recently to "wikilivres.org". URL links to previous domain names, without any templates being used, may need to be changed. This is not necessary if pages are linked via the templates, then the link is updated with one change of code.
Similarly, Wikilivres pages frequently link to Wikisource, as well as to Commons, Wikidata, and Wikipedia.
Wikilivres.ru
editWikilivres.ru is a spin-off site from Wikilivres but it is hosted at the Russian .ru top-level domain. It was created in 2012 after a split with the Canadian site over hosting texts under Creative Commons licenses which do not allow derivatives or commercial copying. Content at the site is in Russian, English, Armenian, Bulgarian, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Scots, Serbian, Spanish, and Ukrainian. The site's interface is in Russian. It may be appropriate to link there as well for authors who only allow CC BY-NC-ND works or similar licenses (such as Richard Stallman).
Since May 2017, CC-BY-ND and CC-BY-NC works are allowed on Wikilivres, see Wikilivres:Project:Inclusion_policy#Previous Licensing Restrictions at Wikilivres.
