Images edit

Some images may be available in Commons:Category:Recherches sur les substances radioactives (Marie Curie) Outlier59 (talk) 12:31, 27 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Glad to see you get this up here, and a good idea to add more of Curie's work (and promote it to Feature text). If you would like me to help in some way—images, text clean-up, or the second proofread,—then let me know. 'Cygnus'.
@Cygnis insignis:, you're welcome to proofread this and work on the images. I just figured I'd better import it before I forgot about it. Thanks for letting me know there's something in English! Outlier59 (talk) 13:45, 27 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
I downloaded the jp2.zip file and will add images to pages marked as 'problematic'. My image clean-up skills are basic, so happy to pass this task over to anyone more proficient. I created Commons:Category:Radio-active substances (Curie) to contain any images. CYGNIS INSIGNIS 17:24, 27 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
I don't know about this ever making a Feature text, but it would be nice if it were at least here. :) Don't worry too much about image clean-up, basic black & white pngs should be fine. If the image is crooked on the page... well, if it was that way in the original, it was that way. If you look at this "Feature text", you'll see some odd stuff gets in that "Feature text" category.
I'll poke away at first-round proofreading on this, if you'd rather not do the first round. I just don't want to interfere with what you're doing if you want to work on it. Let me know. Outlier59 (talk) 00:15, 28 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
I agree with you about images, being presented—er—'verbatim', though I tweak the rotation when I can (rationale available on request). I'm very keen on getting on this text featured as well, I'm sure that others would be too; I'm personally more interested in the story of pure science than the minutiae of war. My idea is that this one, and the one you nominated, could tie in with event mentioned at POTM March. CYGNIS INSIGNIS 04:57, 28 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Fine with me. Outlier59 (talk) 10:45, 28 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Tables, Greek, math equations, and high decimal points edit

I'm leaving some pages "not proofread" while I'm going through this, but I'm doing a good bit of clean up on those. Greek characters and high decimal points, mainly--with a few French characters thrown in. I'll try to do a few pages each day. If I hit a page heavy in math equation formatting, it'll go more slowly. I'm not eager to spend time on tables, so if someone else wants to pick this up, please go for it! Outlier59 (talk) 01:18, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

I am happier to do tables than equations, so that should work okay. I have marked some pages as problematic and put commentary in that they are equations, meaning that I have otherwise proofread and formatted. To note that I have been using · for the decimal markers. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:53, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Billinghurst! This one needs a table, and I think some other "not proofread" pages. · looks the same as · -- ·, so it doesn't matter which is used, as far as I know. Outlier59 (talk) 13:14, 29 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

First round done edit

@Cygnis insignis: and @Billinghurst: — I've gone through these pages. Pages marked "problematic" need images; pages marked "not proofread" need tables. I didn't do anything with the advertisements, since they're not part of the work proper.

I'm not sure all math equations are centered correctly. Today some simply would not center. Maybe you can get that to work.

Let me know if you want me to come back for another round after images and tables are done. Outlier59 (talk) 19:09, 3 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

I am not able to find 'Fig. 10', if it exists. I think the references to labels in the figures should be smaller capitals, A, rather than lower case smallcaps, a. CYGNIS INSIGNIS 12:38, 4 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I don't see 'Fig. 10' in this book, either, so I guess we just leave it out. Apparently it's in the French version. I always have trouble seeing the difference between small caps and "smaller" caps, so I usually just choose one and use it throughout a book. I'm not sure it makes much difference, as long as it's consistent throughout the book. Outlier59 (talk) 13:39, 4 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Problem on page 41 edit

@Kathleen.wright5:, you flagged page 41 as Problematic for "scientific formulas not written properly". I'm not seeing where the Wikisource formulas are rendering incorrectly per the scanned text, so I'd appreciate it if you could clarify your concern so it can be fixed. Outlier59 (talk) 02:16, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Those formulas are not displaying for me either. I get huge red warning messages in place of the formulas. --EncycloPetey (talk) 02:38, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
The notice says in part 'Failed to parse (PNG conversion failed; check for correct installation of latex and dvipng (or dvips + gs + convert))' then some kind of technical stuff. This is happening with Firefox for Mac and Safari 9.1 (Mac only). I used User Agent on Safari with IE 7 - 11, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome Mac and Windows, Firefox for Windows and iOS 9.3 (iPad, iPhone and iPod touch). The only difference on iOS being in black & white instead of red. --kathleen wright5 (talk) 12:02, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I followed the instructions at Help:Fractions and functions. png conversion vs html seems to be a user preference setting, but I'm not sure where that is. I'm baffled. Outlier59 (talk) 12:23, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
The User Preference for Math is under Appearance, there are 3 Preferences PNG images, La TeX source (for text browers) and MathML with SVG or PNG fallback (recommended for modern browers and accessibility tools). Please note I was not logged in with Safari.--kathleen wright5 (talk) 12:37, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

P.S. I'm using PNG images.--kathleen wright5 (talk) 12:38, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thanks, now I found that. Mine is set to MathML. That's probably the difference, then. Try changing yours to MathML and see if that works for you for page 41. Outlier59 (talk) 12:52, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
It worked and I've now Proofread the page.--kathleen wright5 (talk) 13:07, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
But still the same when logged out.--kathleen wright5 (talk) 13:10, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
See w:Help:Displaying a formula. For some reason the default is png rendering, which apparently has technical glitches. Outlier59 (talk) 14:25, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Now User:ShakespeareFan00 has put it back to Problematic because the first formula with MathML with SVG or PNG falllback now says 'Failed to parse (syntax error):' plus more technical stuff.--kathleen wright5 (talk) 20:33, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
ShakespeareFan00 changed the formula formatting[1]. He didn't say why that looked like an improvement to him, so I assume he just went with what he sees on his screen -- as do we all. This is a technical problem that WikiMedia needs to sort out. Outlier59 (talk) 01:34, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
None of the versions of that page adequately display for me. Logged a phabricator bug. — billinghurst sDrewth 05:13, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
<grrr> browser issues ... resolved.

I have submitted a phabricator request to ask for the default <math> setting to be different, to the more advanced. — billinghurst sDrewth 05:51, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks for passing this problem to WikiMedia! I hope they will solve this. Is there some way to notify existing English Wikisource editors that they should check their Math settings in user preferences, and suggest they change to MathML? I'm not using "default" settings, and I suppose most people have made some changes to Wikisource user default settings over time. So most editors probably have that png setting for Math -- not to mention anyone who isn't logged in. This sort of thing can cause ill-feeling between well-meaning editors -- and also present Math gibberish to anyone who isn't logged in. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated! Transclude? edit

@Billinghurst: @Cygnis insignis: @Kathleen.wright5: What's your opinion on transcluding this to mainspace? I think it's in decent condition, but I'm worried that many users might see math gibberish. Outlier59 (talk) 00:24, 16 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Looks OK now when I'm logged out. Tested with Firefox for Mac, Safari and Safari as Internet Explorer 11. --kathleen wright5 (talk) 00:36, 16 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Page 41 looks okay to me now. I tried a few different settings, but I'm not really across what had been going wrong with the math. I'll have another look as I read it in main. It was nice to see this text coming together, with a little swarm of collaborators and Outlier59 wrangling this project into a presentable state. CYGNIS INSIGNIS 03:48, 16 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Transclude done. Cover and title pages repeat each other, so I put the cover on a separate page. Made a translation page Research on radioactive substances. The French version has a TOC. I put this version in one page. Outlier59 (talk) 13:15, 18 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Billinghurst: @Cygnis insignis: @Kathleen.wright5: What's your opinion on having this as one page in namespace? Should the chapters be separate pages? Outlier59 (talk) 01:43, 23 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Outlier59: I think one page in main is good. CYGNIS INSIGNIS 10:29, 24 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
