RESOLUTION NO. 06, S. 2008

DECLARING THE GALA-RODRIGUEZ HOUSE IN SARIAYA, QUEZON A HERITAGE HOUSE

WHEREAS, the Constitution of the Philippines provides that “The State shall promote and popularize the nation’s historical and cultural heritage and resources;”

WHEREAS, Presidential Decree No. 260, dated August 1, 1973, specifically vested the National Historical Institute with the power to declare historical sites and structures;

WHEREAS, the Gala-Rodriguez house showcasing classic Art Deco style was built in 1930 by Filipino Architect Juan Nakpil;

WHEREAS, during the Second World War, the underground room of the house served as safe house for the Gala-Rodriguez family until they evacuated;

WHEREAS, the house served as headquarters of the Japanese Imperial Army and, being spared from total destruction during the incendiary bombings, as venue of the welcome party given to the American soldiers in 1945;

WHEREAS, the house was added with a swimming pool in the 1950’s and survived the great fire that razed the town in the 1960’s;

WHEREAS, the house is distinct for its historical and artistic value and today it is one of the extant structures designed by Architect Juan Nakpil that exemplifies the classic art deco style of the early twentieth century;

NOW THEREFORE, the National Historical Institute, by virtue of the powers vested in it by Presidential Decree No. 260, hereby declares the old Gala-Rodriguez House located on Rizal Street in Sariaya, Quezon a Heritage House.
