משמוטא m. (שמט) a sneak thief, opp. to לסטיס. Ab. Zar. 15b וכ׳ דזימנין במ׳ (Ms. M. בעלמא במשמיטא, Rashi במשמוטי׳) it refers to an (ordinary) thief who sometimes commits murder to save his own life.
משמוש m. (משמש) touch. Gen. R. s. 52 ידים מ׳ an illicit touch (of her) with his hand. Midr. Till. to Ps. VIII, 41read ]אצבעותי מ׳ אאלא.. . העליומים(ed. Bub. מעשה, corr. acc.) those above (the angels) and those below have only (as much power as) the touch of thy fingers; ib. to Ps. XIX אצבעו מ׳ כדי ed. Bub. (ed. אצבעו כדי, corr. acc.); Yalk. משמע m. (b. h.; שמע) 1) obedience. Sifre Deut. 357 ref. to Deut. XXXIV, 9) וכ׳ גדול מ׳ לך אין there can be no obedience greater than this. -- 2) ordinary sense. -- כמשמעו in its usual sense. Yoma 61a כמ׳ מזבח 'altar' in its usual sense (requires no explanation); כמשמען הכהנים the priests' &c.; a. fr..
משמע m. (שמע Hif.) intimation, logical conclusion. Yoma 42b, v. מילא II. - Esp. ממששמע by implication, con- structively. Y. Erub. III, 21b top; Y. Ned. משמר m. (b. h.; שמר) 1) guard, esp. a division for duty of priests and Levites. Taan. IV, 2, v.מעמד. Hor. 13a מ׳ דאש chief of the guard. Taan. l. c. שבאותו ישראל כ׳ the Israelites attached (as מעמד) to that division; a. fr. -- Pl. משמרות. Ib. Num. R. s. 3; a. fr. -- 2) (= אשמורת) watch, a certain portion of the day or the night. משמש (v. מוש, משש) to touch, feel; to handle, manip- ulate; to examine, search. B. Mets. 21b למשמש עשוי אדם וכ׳ בכיסו a person (carrying money with him on the road) usually feels for his bag at short intervals. Men. 36a בהן ממשמש he puts his hand on them. Erub. 54b top כל בה ממשמש שאדם זמן as often as one searches it (the fig- tree);בו ממשמש כזשהתינוק as often as the suckling touches the breasts. Sabb. 82a וכ׳ בצרור ימשמש let him manip- ulate (stimulate the rectum) with pebbles. Erub. 13b במעשיו ימשמש let him examine what he is doing, contrad. to יפשפש search (investigate) his past doings. Keth. 12a וכ׳ את למשמש to be around (watch) the bridegroom and bride (in order to prevent deception). Snh. 63b ממשמשין בהן they (the famished animals) licked them (begging for food); a. fr. ובא מ׳ to come gr0piingly, slowly. Y. Peah VIII, beg. 20a, v. מוש h. -- Y. Ned.
