ל Lamed, the twelfth letter of the Alphabet. It inter- changes with the liquids, e. g. שלשלת a. שרשרת; נדנה a. לדנה &c. -- ל as first radical letter often rjected in in- fection, e. g. לקח, קח, קיחה &e.

ל־ (ל־, ל־, ל־, ל־) prefix (b. h.) unto, to, toward, for; (before infinitive of verbs) to. Pes. I, 1 וכ׳ לארבעה אור, v. אור II. --- להבא, לבא, v. בא III. Ber. I, 1 לאכול to eat; לקרות to read; a. v. fr. -- Ib. אחד ליום to one day, i. e. within one day (until morning). Zeb. 5, 3 וכ׳ ולילה ליום within a day and a night until midnight (v. comment.). לא (b. h.; v. לאי) not, no. Ber. I, 1 וכ׳ קרינו לא we have omitted tto recite &c. Ib. III, 4 וכ׳ ולא . . לא neither betore nor after. Nidd. 5a וכ׳ להן אין לא, no; it means &c., v. לאו; a. v. fr. -- ולא indeed uot Hull. 4b וכ׳ והכתיב ולא indeed not (is it so that the verb הסית never refers to persuasion by speech) Do we not read &c. ; a. v. fr. -- תעשה לא (מצות) a prohibitory laiw, opp. שה, a positive command; v. לאו. Kidd. I, 7. Macc. 14b bot.; a. v. fr. -- בלא without. Ber. 35a bot. ברכה ב׳ without pronouncing a. benediction; a. v. fr. -שלא־ והוא, v. הוא.
לא I ch. same. Targ. Gen. II, 5; a. v. fr. - Pes. 10b לא . . בתר אין . . . מקמיה before the time when it is for- bidden, yes (he must search after leavened bread); after the time, no (he must not search). Ib. שנא לא there is no difference; a. v. fr.
לא II m. (preced. wds.) particle, mote. Yoma 20b, v. חרגא. Midr. Till. to Ps. LXVIII, 3 חשיבי כלא they are like a mote.

(= תעשה לא) a plain prohibitory law, the violauon of which, in the absence of any severer punishment indicated in the Script- ure, is punished with thirty-nine lashes (v. ארבעים, s. v. ארבעה). Men. 58b, a. e. שבכללות ל׳ an implied prohibition, e. g. Lev. II, 11 (where כל implies any mixture of leaven or honey); Ex. XII, 9 (where תאכלו אל refers to גא, to מבשל, and implicitly to any preparation not through the action of fire). Ib. וכ׳ כל׳ לאויה לא the prohibition in this case is not a special one for itself as is the prohib- ition, Thou shalt not muzzle' (Deut. XXV, 4, which is preceded by the law regulating corporal punishment); Pes. 41b. -עשה־ מכלל הבא ל׳ (v. כלל) a prohibition deriv- ed by immplication from a positive command, e. g. the law (Lev. I, 2) defining what animals are fit for the altar and indirectly excluding unclean animals. Zeb. 34a . . ל׳ עליו לוקין . . the transgression of an implicit prohibition is punishable with lashes; ib. עליו לוקין אין . . ל׳ is not punishable. Pes. l. c. עשה עשה מכלל הבא ל׳ a prohibi- tion derived from a positive command is treated like a. positive command (the neglect of which is not indict- able); Hull. 81a; a. fr. -- לעשה הניתק ל׳, v. נתק. -- Pl. לאוין (לווין).
