לאי ch. same, 1) to labor. Targ. Josh. XXIV, 13; a. fr. -- 2) to be tired. Targ. O. Gen. XIX, 11 לאיו ed. Berl. (oth. ed. לאיאו; Y. אשתלהייו); a. fr. Ithpe. אלאי to be mworn out, to make a vain effort. Gen. R. s. 50 (ref. to וילאו, Gen. l. c.) אלאון they labored in vain (with ref. tto Is. XVI, 12); אינסון they grew sick (with ref. to Is. לאי, לאיי, ליי (. הי לא) = לאו. Tosef. Erub. XI (VIII), 23 הוות בידיא לאי הא (ed. Zuck. לוו, read לוו) was this (the first tongs) not a divine creation?, i. e. it was nothing else than &c.; Pes. 54a היא שמים בידי בריה ל׳ הא (v. Rabb. D. S. a. l. notes 9 a. 10); Tosef. Rag. I, 9 ל׳ הא (ed. Zuck. אלא, Var. לוי הא read; לוו). -- Ker. 12a ה״נ לאיו בטומאתי עמדתי לא Ar. (ed. only עמדתי לא ה״נ) no; in this case, too, he may correct himselft(saying), Idid not remain &c. Ib. 6b צריכי מיצרד לאיי it is not so; they are neces- sary. Ib. וכ׳ דכתיב ל׳ it is not; for it is written &c. -Snh. c40b מופנה אפנויי לאיי it is not so; there is indeed an ex- pression in tthe text open for interpretation; Sabb. 64a וכ׳ לאי is it not? it is indeed &c. Yoma 22b מגופיה אפרעו ל׳ no? Indeed, he was punished on his body.

*לאיטור m. (~~vng) rhetor, advocate. Sifre Deut. 343 וכ׳ לאהד לו ונשכר הבימה . ללל like to an advocate who stands on the platform (in court) and has been hired by a man to speak in his behalt; Yalk. ib. 951 . . . ללאיטר וכ׳ ונוכר (corr. acc.).

לב m. (b. h.; לבב; cmp. קרב a. קרב) [innermost,] heart, bosom; thought, inclination, mind &c. Sot. I, 5 לבה היה נאה if her bosom was handsome (inciting the senses). Shebu. 26a אנסך לבך thy heart has carried thee away against thy will, i. e. you were under the impression that you told the truth. Nidd. 3b, a. fr. נוקפו לבו, v. נקף. Men. 79b, a. e. עליהן מתנה ביד לב the authorities (in receiving materials for offferings) accept them with a condition at heart (that they may dispose at their discretion of what has not been used for sacrifices). גס־ לבו, v. גוס I. -- Midr. Till. to Ps. IX, 1 עליו לבו his heart is against him, he bears him a grudge. - Zeb. 21a צדוקים של מלבן להוציא to remove (the false opinion) out of the heart of the Sadducees, . e. to demmonstrate, by practice, the rejection of their opinion; Hag. 23a (Ms. M. הצדוקים מפני); Yoma. 2a (Ms. M. הצ׳ מפני, v. Par. III, 7). Gen.
