*פוטא m. (~ז~, pl. ~0~~) lights. Ylamd. to Num. X, 29, quot. in Ar. שאת (כמו) טובים במעשים שהאיו פוטיאל פ׳ ביונית אומר (ed. Koh. פוטיא) Hobab is surnamed Putiel (Ex. VI, 25), because he shone through good deeds, as you say in Greek phota.

פוטינוס m. (~m~~~) bright, splendid. Tanh. ed. Bub., Vayesheb 16 ונעשה פרעה של לביתו שנכנם פוטיפר וכ׳ פוטינוס ביתו his name was Potifar (mo~pb~), be- cause he entered the house of Pharaoh, and his house became bright, for he brightened up the house of Pharaoh; Gen. R. s. 86 (differ. paronomasia) שירד כיון . פורע שהיה פוטינוון נעשה לשם הפר Ar. (ed. פויטנון) he used to uncover himself before the idol, but when the bullock (Joseph, Deut. XXXIII, 17) came there, he (Potifar) became en- lightened; Yalk. ib. 145 פ׳ יוסף שירד וכיון [lossator explains עשיר rich, v. Gen. XXXIX, 5].
פוטירין m. (~~~~~~) poterion, name of a shrub (Astragalus Poterium), a species of tragacanth, yielding a gum which was used for spicing wines; פ׳ פיילי a vial of poterion, a medicinal drink taken atter bathing. Gen. R. s. 51 (ref. to כוסם מנת, Ps. XI, 6) המרחץ לאחר פ׳ כפ׳ (not פיטרין) like the vial of poterion after a bath; Y. Pes. X, 37c top וכ׳ פ׳ כדיפלי ם׳ דיפלי (corr. acc.); Yalk. Ps. 655 (not פוטרין). Gen. R. s. 10 יין של פ׳ פ׳ הביאו שיצא כיון לשתותו when he (Titus) came out of the bath, tthey handed him a vial of poterion wine to drink; Koh. R. to V,8 כוס יין של פ׳ פ׳ (not פוטרין). Gen. R. s. 88 פ׳ בתוך נמצא ובוב שלו פ׳ a fy was found in his (Pharaoh's) vial &c.; Yalk. ib. 146 פושרין סילי (corr. acc.).
