פקיד m. (b. h.; פקד) appointed to examine, officer, commissioner. -- Pl. פקידים. Pesik. R. s. 42 [read;] הרבה וכ׳ שנתפקד יש יש פ׳ there are various kinds of com- missioners (of the Lord), some are appointed &c., v. פקד. Num. R. s. 14 פ׳ כנגד וכבשים and lambs were offered (Num. VII, 83) in behalf of the officers; a. e.
פקידה f. (preced.) 1) examination. Nidd. I, 1; Eduy. I, 1 לפ׳ מפ׳ (her uncleanness dates back) from the present examination to the last one. Ib. כפ׳ זו הרו this is as good as an examination; a. fr. - 2) divine visitation (for good or for evil), remembrance, decree; use of the verb פקד. Snh. 91b פ׳ משעת from the moment when it is decreed (what the embryonic germ should grow to be). Pesik. פקיע I m. (פקע) 1) strip; shreds of garments ravelled into threads for iwicks. Shek..V, 1הפ׳ על (ממונה) בבי בן Ben Bebai was appointed to superintend the preparation of wicks from the shreds of priestly garments; Y. Peah VIII, 21a (interch. with הפתילה). -- 2) a strip of leather, a strap used as a whiip. Yoma 23a בפ׳. . . לוקה he is smitt en by the overseer with a strap (expl. מדדא, מטרקא). Ib. (ref. to Shek. l. c.) נגדא פ׳ מאי אמינא I would now say, pki'a means strap (appointed to execute punishment). -- Eduy. III, 5 הפ׳ בית (Rabad הפקיעה) that end of the bow from which the thong is anapped. -- 3) [that which is to be stripped or ravelled,] bundle, bunch. B. Kam. 117a הושט זה פ׳ לי Ar. (ed. עמיר פ׳) hand me this bunch (of sheaves). Tosef. B. Mets. VIII, 4; a. e. - Pl. פקיעים, פקיעין. Sabb. XXIV, 2 וכ׳ עמיר פקיעי מתירין you may untie bundles of sheaves for the cattle &c. Ib. 155aכיפין הן הן פ׳ הן הן pm'kiin and kippin mean the same things. Ib. תרי פ׳ bunches are called p'kiin, when tied with two bands, v. יפה. Tosef. Succ. פקל to split, peel. Pi. פיקל same, esp. to strip onions. Maasr. I, 6 הבצלים וכ׳ מפקל איו ואם משיפקל (Y. ed.משיפקילוו; Ms. M. משיקפלו מקפל .. .) onions are subject to ithes when one begius to strip them (for storage), and if one does not want to strip &c., v. ערימה; Y. ib. 49a bot. משיפלו, expl. דו מן וכ׳ ירים, v. פורגרה. kts. II, 5 בבצלים לפפקל . . . התחיל when one has begun the stripping &c.; (Tosef. ib. II, 13 לקלף).

פקם to split, perforate (cmp. פצם), esp. to prick an animal's mouth with the bit; to govern. Num. R. s. 20 (ref. to Num. XXIII, 16) he put a thing in his mouthi' כאדם שירצה להיכן ופוקמה . . . שנותן as a man puts a bit in the mouth of a beast and makes it go in what direction he desires; פיו את פוקם הקביה כך so the Lord pricked his (Balaam's) mouth (making him go back to Balak);Tanh. Balak 13; Y'lamd. to Num. l. c., quot. in Ar. פוקם היה ופוקמה . . . (ed. Koh. ופוקקה, corr. acc.). Pi. פיקם same, to prick, perforate. Num. R. l. c. (ref.. to Num. l. c. 5) וכ׳ ופיקמו פיו שעיקם he (the Lord) curved his mouth (as with a bit) and pierced it as a man drives a nail into a board; Yalk. ib. 765 ועקמו פיו את עיקם (corr. acc.).
פקס I (cmp. preced.) to tear open, open forcibly. Sabb. 155b (expl. המראה) וכ׳ פיה את ופוקס מרביצה (Ms. M. ופוקק) he makes the animal lie down, and opens its mouth wide, and makes it swallow &c.; Tosef. ib. XVIII,2 צוארו את ופוקם.
פקס II (denom. of פיקס) 1) to paint the face with rotge (cmp. סbxob). Sabb. X, 6 הפוקסת וכן and the same is the case with her who rouges (on the Sabbath); Y. ib. X, end, 12d צובעה משום חייבת הפוקסת rouging comes under the category of dyeing. Bab. ib. 64b תכחול שלא תפקום ולא that she (the menstruant) must not paint (her eyes) nor rouge. M. Kat. 20b ולהיות . . . לכוף רשאי אאינו פוקסת dare not force his wife (mourning for a parent) to paint or rouge; a. fr. -- 2) to make smal curls pasted on the forehead. Sabb. 94b (ref. to Sabb. X, 6) משום פוקסת טווה curling comes under the category of spinning; ib. 95a בונה משום ופוקסת גודלת plaiting the hair and curling comes under the category of building.
