money for (the higher offices of) the priesthood, and they
were changed from year to year like the parhedroi who
are appointed for one year, they named it &c.; Y. ib. I, 38a
פראידתין פלהדרין לשכת אותה קורין עכשיו (read; פראידרין, a
gloss) now they call it tthe cell of tthe palhedrin(paredrin).
Bab. ib. 9a וכ׳ חובטין הללו שפ׳ מתוד because those assessors
(market commissioners) strike them (the bakers) and say,

פרהנגריא f. (parangaria, v. אנגריא) a public ser- vice over and above that which one is bound to render, egxtra service (which is paid for). Gitt. 44a עבדו המוכר וכ׳ גוי לפרהנג Ar. (ed. נכרי, read; לפרהנגריא) if a man sells (rents out) his slave for extra service, he becommes a freed-- man (after he is dismissed from the service). Ib. שאינה בפ׳ חוזרת it means the service in an expedition that does not come back to the samme place (so that the owner lets the slave go out of his control).
פרהסיא f. (~~~~~~~) free speech, frankness. Deut. R. s. 2, end וכ׳ בפ׳ אותו אומרים הן . . . ביוהכ אבל but on the Day of Atonement .. they say it openly (in a loud voice), Blessed be the name of his glorious kingdom, (opp. בלחישה (v. חשאי). - Esp. בפפ׳ publicly, opp. בצינעה. Ib. וכ׳ בפ׳ בה תתקשטי אל do not adorn thyself with it in public, but only in the house. Snh. 74a מצוה אפי׳ בפ׳ אבל וכ׳ but if a Jew is forced to transgress a religious law in public, he must surrender his life even for a minor law; bV פ׳ וכמה and the presence of how many is required to call it a public act? Ib. וכ׳ פחותה פ׳ אין a public is no less than ten persons. Ib. הואי פ׳ אסתר והא but was not Esther's act (when she was forced to marry king Ahasverus) a public one? Hag. 5a (ref. to Koh. XII, 14) בפ׳ לעני צדקה הנותן זה this refers to one who gives charity to a poor man in public (the Lord judges whether this be a good or a bad deed).
