פרת (b. h.) pr. n. P'rath, 1) the river Euphrates. Gen. R. s. 16 וכ׳ ורבה שמרה פ׳ it is named P'rath (the growing), for its waters grow and increase, until people pass it on ships; וכ׳ ורבין פרין שמימיו פ׳ P'rath, for its waters are frhitful (fructifying); במגריפה שכלה עד והולך שמפריד פ׳ Rashi (ed. שמפרש) it is named P'rath (v. פרת), because it goes on dividing (branching off in channels), until it ends under the (digging) spade; Yalk. Deut. 801 כמגרפה (corr. acc.); Sifre Deut. 6 מגריפה שכלה עד והולד שמפרה לגרפו it goes on fructifying (irrigating), until the spade ceases to dig it; Yalk. Gen. 22 כלה שהוא עד והולך מפריס וכ׳ ופותחין goes on dividing, until it disappears, and they open it with the spade. Bekh. 55a; a. fr. -- Denom. פרתי, pl. פרתים. Midr. Till. to Ps. פרת (cmp. פרר, פרד) to divide, crush, crumble. Pi. פירת same, trnsf. (with ב) to belittle, make light of. Koh. R. to III, 11 וכ׳ עולם של בממונו פ׳ הוא . . . אחד אילו if any one else had said, vanity of vanities &c.' (ib. I, 2), I might have thought, one that never owned ttwo pennies in his life, made light of the wealth of the world &c.
פרת I ch. same. Pa. פרית 1) to divide, dismember (of the basilisk whose look is believed to cause a person's limbs tto fall apart, v. כבס, a. Gen. R. s. 10, a. e., quot. s. v. נשל; cmp. יפריש Prov. R. to II, 10 ליה ומפרתין . . . חמשא הוון וכ׳ בנבוכדנצר (read; ביה; Ar. ופרטין) five kings were sitting and sneering at Nebuchadnezzar in the presence of Ze- dekiah; וכ׳ לנב׳ מפרתיה הוא אף (Ar. פרטיה, Var. פדרת, corr. acc.) he, likewise, sneered &c. Itthpe. איפרת to be broken of, separated. Bets. 2a אוכלא הא דאסרת the egg is considered as a broken-of piece of food (part of the hen, not as an independent creation).
