שבות f. (שבת) rest, abstention from secular occupa- tion. Sabb. 89a ש׳ צריכים שאתם. . כלום do you (angels) work, that you needed rest? [Sifra Emor ch. XIII, Par. 11, a. e. cש (אלא) שבתון, read; שבות, v. שבת.]-- Esp. sh'buth, an occupation, on the Sabbath and Pestivals, forbidden by the Rabbis as being out ofharmony with the celebration of the day. Bets. V, 2 וכ׳ ש׳ משום עלין שחייבין כל all occupations which are forbidden as sh'buth. .. on the Sab-- bath, are also forbidden on the Holy Days; משום הן ואלו וכ׳ ששש׳ and these are forbidden as sh'buth; you must not climb up a tree &c. Ib. 37a גרידתא ש׳ a plain act forbidden as sh'buth; דרשות ש׳ an act of exercise of authority; שש׳ דמצוה an act of a religious nature.
