שחוק m. (b. h.; שחק) laughter, sport, jest. Ab. III, 3, v. קלות. Ex. R. s. 42 (ref. to לצחק, Ex. XXXII, 6) ש׳ אין וכ׳ כאן האמוד the sport here mentioned means idolatry, debauchery, and bloodshed; וכ׳ שהוא לש׳ ומנין and whence is it proved that sport' refers to bloodshed? (Answ. ref. to II Sam. II, 14). Y. Peah I, 16a bot. ש׳ . . . דמן שעשה he (Abner) made the blood of lads an object of sport (ref. to II Sam.l. c.). Ber. 31a וכ׳ פיו ש׳... לאדם אסור man should not fill his mouth with laughter in this wold (of oppression). Ib. ש׳ מתוך in a mood of laughter, v. עבות; Y. ib. V, beg. 8a. Pes. 117a; Sabb. 30b מתוך. . שכינה אין וכ׳ ש׳ holy inspiration does not rest upon man when he is in a mood of grief, or indolence, or laughter &c. Ib. (ref. to Koh. VII, 3) וכ׳ שמשחק מש׳ . . . כעם טוב better is the anger the Lord shows the righteous (by trials) in this world, than the laughter the Lord laughs with the wicked (when he makes them prosper) in this world. R. to VI, 11 וכ׳ ושעשוע . . . ש׳ זה אגוז מה as tthe nut is a plaything for children and an entertainment for kings, so is Israel &c.; a. fr. -- Erub. 65b בשחקו אף man's character is also recognized in his jesting. -l[Yalk. Ps. 620 הן שחוק ד׳, v. שחיקה.]-- Pl. שחוקים. Koh. R. to X, 19 (ref. to לחם עושים לשחוק ib.) עושים יראות של לש׳ לחם for the revelries of idolatries they prepare bread, but the wine &c.
שחור Im., שחורה f. (b. h.; זחר II) charred, black; charred or blaok thing. Par. III, 11 אפר בו שיש ש׳ a. charred piece (of the red cow) wwhich is easily pulverized. Keth. 36a, a. e. וכ׳ ש׳ שירבה עד until the black prevails over the white (until the hair in the hair-covered parts of the body seems to prevail over the bare spots). Gitt, 19a וכ׳ בש׳ באבד כתבו if one wrote a letter of divorce with lead, with a black pigment (dry ink), or with coal; Sabb. 104b. Lev. R. s. 31 הש מתוך. . . אדם אין man does not see through the white of the eye, but through the black. Cant. R. to I, 5 וכ׳ במעשי אני ש׳ I am black (soiled) through my own deeds, but beautiful &c., v. נאוה. Ib. במצרים אני 'ש I was black (despised) in Egypt. Ib. אני ש׳ וכ׳ ימות כל I am black (with sins) all the days of the year, but beautiful on the Day of Atonement; a. fr. -- Pl. שחורים, שחורין; שחורות. Ned. III, 8 וכ׳ הראש משחורי הנודר iff one forswears benefts from black-headed people', he is for- bidden &c.; וכ הראש ש׳ נקראין שאין by bblack-headed' are understood grown up mmen generally (without regard to the condition of their hair). Gen. R. s. 59, beg. מאיר ר׳ ראש שהורי. . R. M. came to Mamle where he saw none but blackhaired people (no aged among them). Oant. R. to V, 11 (ref. to שחרות ib.) וכ׳ וש׳ כעורין .. . Sס אלו this refers to the students; although they appear un- gainly and black in this world &c.; ib. . . . תלמודות אלו וכ׳ וש׳ כעורות this refers to such texts of the Law as appear too ugly and black (referring to unesthetic sub- jects) to speak of them in public, but the Lord says, they are pleasing &c.; Lev. R. s. 19; a. fr.

שחז (cmp. חזה) to expose to sight, uncover. Part. pass. . שחוזה; pl. שחוזות. Sabb. V, 2 ש׳ יוצאות חלותs ewes(on the Sabbath) may be led outt(with their posteriors) exposed; ib. 53b וכ׳ שאוחזין שחוזות מאי what is sh'hueoth? They tie their tails up in order &c. Ib. דהאי משמע מאי הוא דגלוי לישנא ש׳ what evidence is there that sh'hueoth has the meaning of uncovering? (Answ. ref. to זונה שית, Prov. VII, 10, v. שוזה.) Hif. השחיז to brighten, polish; to whet, sharpen. Kel. XIV, 5 משישתיזנה הסכין the knife becomes susceptible of levitical uncleanness, when he(the manufacturer) polishes it. Hull. II, 3 וכ׳ ועף . . . ה׳ if one whetted the knife and (in beginning to cut) felt tired, and another person con- tinued the cutting. Bets. III, 7 וכ׳ משחיזין אין you must not whet the knife (to slaughter on the Holy Day), but &c., v. נסא. Y. Ab. Zar. II, 40c bot. ואין. .. מוכרין אין וכ׳ משחיזין you must not sell them (the gentiles in Pa- lestine) weapons or armor, nor may you sharpen weapons for them; a. fr.
שחז, שחיז ch. same; part. pass.שחיז whetted, v.infra. Af. אשחיז to polish, whet. Targ. Ps. VII, 13 ישחיז Ms. (ed. שחיז; h. text ילטש).
שחח (b. h.) to bend, bow (interch. with שחה a. שוח). Y. Ber. I, 3a bot. וכ׳ ששוחחין . . אלו these are the bene- dictions at which you must bow &c.; ישוח שלא . .. השוחח (or ישוח) if one bows at every benediction, we teach him that he must not do so; Ber. 34a; Gen. R. s. 39 לשוח . . . והשוחה (or לשוח); Tosef. Ber. I, 9 שלא .. . השוחה ישחה. Ruth R. to II, 5 וכ׳ שווחחות הנשים כל all other women stooped in leaning, but she (Ruth) sat down; (Yalk. ib. 601 עומדות).
שחט I (b. h.; cmp. חוט III) to draw, stretch. Part. pass. שחוט. Y. Yoma IV, 41d top (expl. שחוט הב, IKings X, 17) כשעוה משוך שהיה it was drawn out like wax; Cant. R. to III, 10; Yoma 45a כחחוט שנטוה it was spun like a. thread; Hull. 30b. Ib. (to prove that in slaughtering yau. must draw the knife over the animal's throat and not chop) וכ׳ ומשך אלא ושחט אין 'shahatg (Lev. I, 5) means and he shall draw', and so it says ahab shahut (v. supra) and also hets shahug (Jer. IX, 7; Keri שוחט).
שחט II (b. h.; cmp. חטט) to cut the throat, esp. to say aa animal by cutting the throat according to ritual laws. Hull. I, 1 וכ׳ שוחטין חכל all persons are ftt to do the ritual slaughtering, and their act is legal, except &c.; וכ׳ ששחטו וכולן and all those (mentioned as unfit), if they cut under the supervision of others &c.
