תבל f. (b. h.; יבל, v. Ges. Thes. s. v.) world. Sifre Deut. 37 (ref. to Prov. VIII, 26) שהיא . .. ישראל ארן זו ת׳ בכל מתובלת tebel means Palestine, and why is it called tebl Because itt is rich in every thing; Yalk. Prov. 943 (ref. to Prov. VIII, 31) מכל מתובלת שהיא . . . ארצו זו ת׳ ארצות tebl means his (God's) land, because it is richer than all other lands; ib. בפירותיה מתובלת שהיא ת׳ tebel, because it (the earth) is flavored with its fruits. תבל m. (בלל) 1) mixture, spice, seasoning. Y. Orl. I, 61b top וכ ביותר ת׳ אין spices have no seasoning effect in a mixture larger than two hundred times their quantity. Arakh.II, 6 בנעימה ת׳ ליתן כדי in order to put spice (sweet- ness) in the melody (to raise the effect of the melody through the accompaniment of young voices). Yalk. Prov. 943 (ref. to חבל, Prov. VIII, 31) Palestine is called tebel וכ׳ שבתוכה ת׳ שם על for the spice which is in it, and what is this ? The Law; Sifre Deut. 37 תכלין, v. infra. -- Pl. תבלין, (tradit. pronunc.) תבלין. Orl. תבלול m. (b. h. תבלל; בלל) mixture, blending of the colors of the eye. Sifra Emor, ch. II, Par. 3 נכנם לבן ת׳ וכ׳ בשחור t'ballul means the white of the eye invading the black, or the reverse; (oth. opin.) וכ׳ פוסק לבן, v. ססירה II; Bekh. VI, 2. Ib. 38b וכ׳ המבלבל דבר ת׳ לשוון מהו what is the meaning of t'ballul? Anything that disturbs the arrangement of the eye, v. בלבל. -- Pl. תבלולים, תבלולין. Y. Pes. IX, 36a bot. בו פוסלין ות׳ דוקים cataracts and blendings make it unfit for the Passover sacrifice; Tosef. ib. VIII, 11 וכ׳ ות׳ דקין נהבו לא מצרים פסח for the Passover in Egypt they did not consider cataracts and blendings to be disqualifications, but for the regular Passover they did &c.
